Training day is a buddy cop film with a massive difference, more like an anti-buddy movie. The whole film takes place in one gritty, hard day, a training day for the rookie, teamed up with the experienced streetwise detective, he has one chance to impress and get onto his team.

Denzel Washington's character is a brutal cop with a pragmatic approach to policing the streets, wishing that the animals wipe each other out, he also has a little problem, he needs to raise one million dollars for the Russian mob by midnight or he's a dead man.
Little by little he drags Hawke's wide eyed, innocent character into the murky world of theft, robbery, drug abuse and murder

Denzel washingtom giving an oscar winning performance is totally absorbing as the corrupt, world weary detective and Ethan Hawke is almost as good [ high praise indeed]. The rest of the cast are only bit players in this drama but they give brilliant understated performances allowing the two leads to shine.

This is a super cool cop thriller, the whole things happend over one day and most of the time there are only the two main protaganists on screen and their relationship is compelling enough to not only keep your attention but actually draws you into this dark, dark world.
