Trancers Trancers is one of the few straight to video, B-movies of the mid to late 80’s that still stands tall in my collection (others would include Better Off Dead, Dead Heat and Hell Comes to Frogtown). Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, and later Full Moon Entertainment, produced an incredible amount of films during that period. Most just falling over that line of bad-but-not-quite-bad-enough-to-be-good but a surprisingly high number being reasonably good, or so bad that they became entertaining to watch. This movie was released around the same time as THE TERMINATOR. In fact, I am sure that I originally saw it in the same week that I saw that film. I seem to remember thinking at the time that they were equally as good as each other. In this movie, Tim Thomerson (who is probably on a par with Arnie in the acting stakes - that is, neither of them could act their way out of a paper bag) stars as Jack Deth, a cop from the future who travels back to 1980s LA to search for a time-travelling baddie. The plot line is derivative (but then, so is that of THE TERMINATOR), but the movie as a whole is fun. It was followed by a good number of sequels, none ...

Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) is a cop in the future, a post-apocalyptic time where humanity is threatened by Trancers, zombie-like creature. When it becomes apparant that his nemesis is trying to change the past, Deth goes back to stop him. A fairly cliched and tired premise is given a new twist by the sheer imagination of the script. Made by Charles Band before he decide to carbon copy all his films and shoot in Romania, there are a number of extremely good touches. A couple of examples: first, the time travel technique involves taking over the body of an ancestor, if no direct ancestor can be found, time travel is not possible.
