Turistas (DVD): Go Home! (1113 words)
by - written on 21/01/08 (Very useful, 37 readings)
Rating:

Ah Turistas! Or you might know it as Paradise Lost; however it's known it is certainly one of those movies that will stick in your head. Turistas was praised when nobody had heard of it, and as soon as that acclaim became big enough for the movie to be seen around the world, the world's response was one of hatred. In Brazil they tried to ban it, because of the possible negative effect it might have on their trade. And in the UK they changed the name both to get away from the bad publicity, and to make the movie more enjoyable to the fans, believing that the name Turistas would alienate potential viewers; thinking it was a foreign language flick. Turistas is a ...  Read the complete review

When Alex, his sister and her best friend decide to go backpacking in Brazil, it is against Alex's best instincts that they decide to take the bus to travel across land. He’s right to be concerned. In spite of his sister's protestations that he worries too much, within minutes a busload of passengers watches in despair as their bus tumbles down the side of a cliff, thanks to the driver’s horrendous driving. With ten hours to wait until the next bus, the backpackers soon get chatting with other foreigners on the bus. Pru, an experienced Australian backpacker proves her worth when she deflates an awkward situation with a local family, interjecting in fluent ...  Read the complete review

Turistas (DVD): Best Scary Movie I've Seen in a long time (283 words)
by - written on 06/11/08 (Very useful, 40 readings)
Rating:

This is one of the best scary movies I have seen in a long time. I was not expecting this movie to be that great, as most of the scary movies that are produced these days have been major disappointments. This movie was different, it was not obsessed with the gore that a lot of horror movies these days thrive on. It was all about the suspense and the twists and turns the plot took all the way to the end of the movie. If you like scary movies I highly recommend this one, it was really good. Turistas is about a group of vacationers who end up stranded in a little village in Brazil after a bus accident eliminates their transportation options and they are forced to ...  Read the complete review

"That is a kidney to go and a side of spleen" (498 words)

Rating:

In the UK this film was released as Paradise Lost rather than the original title shown on Dooyoo of Turistas just in case anyone gets confused. It is hard not to draw comparisons with the Tarantino film Hostel when watching this as the plots are sort of similar, a bunch of backpackers get themselves into an isolated situation and then start to meet some gruesome endings when something that seems like paradise turns out to be a bit more horrific and hence you have a fairly standard horror / thriller on your hands. Instead of the eastern Europe location Hostel chose here we are in the exotic land of Brazil with Alex, his sister and her best friend who are on a ...  Read the complete review
