Twilight - Feel-good love story with pretty scenery & nice direction (Twilight [2008] (DVD))

Advantages: Attractive movie, nice ideas, good production

Disadvantages: No one actor stood out for me, a bit too lacking in substance

Well, part of me is loathe to write a review about something that has already been well documented by others, but as I saw this film last night on DVD I thought I would give it a shot.

I have never read or heard about the books, I think what I have heard is people discussing the movie (rave reviews). So, I watched the film with a completely open mind (the vampire genre movie/TV programme is not something alien to me, and while I'm not obsessed with it, I do not mind watching them).

The first thing that struck me about the film is that it really has no more layers other than the girl meets boy and he happens to be a vampire. I assume it was the original books which produced the idea that vampires sparkle like diamonds in sunlight but cannot testify to that having not read them - I thought that was a great idea. I also liked the idea of there being vampires that choose not to feed on humans, but this concept is not a new one.

The scenery and overall look and feel of the film is nothing short of beautiful, I found myself looking at the credits to see who the director was, which does not happen with every film I watch. While I enjoyed the acting, no one really stood out for me which was a shame as the actors were more than competent.

Overall, the film was a relatively chaste, tame vampire love story set in a school and while watchable and interesting in parts, it was a bit tepid for my taste. The love story was very nice but not enough to make me desperate to see the movie again and just a bit too gushy.

I think the only good elements from the movie is I would be willing to give both the books and the Director a second look in the future.

Summary: Nice film, some interesting ideas but I wanted it to be so much better
