Good story (Unbreakable (DVD))

Advantages: Good plot

Disadvantages: Too high expectations following the sixth sense

I have found that those who have seen this film either liked it immensely, or hated it, absolutely. I belong to the former crowd and consider M. Might to be one of the most promising witer/directors of the 21st century (PT Anderson of Boogie Nights and Magnolia fame, as well as director David Fincher of Seven and Fight club fame are also on this list).

I was absolutely involved in this film from beginning to end. I loved the characters, the plot, and the underlying idea that everyone needs to be happy with themselves-no matter what their calling- in order to be happy in life. The story was, based on my experience, completely original. I think that those who say that it was too morose and dark really missed the point- given the "hell" both Willis and Jackson lived how could someone argue for blue skies and rainbows? These men, like many human beings, were searching for a meaning to life that they couldn't quite find, and as a result were lost in depression and faithlessness.

The ending, like the 6th sense, was a great surprise and ended the film perfectly.

IMO more films should be made like the Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Hollywood has invested so much money in producing films that have no point or connection to the human condition that character-driven films like Seven, Magnolia and Unbreakable are a breath of fresh air to those who go to a movie to "connect" with characters.
