Under Siege (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 27 September, 1999 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skilful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

... think about the likes of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan it becomes apparent that you can be a martial arts star but also have the charisma to pull off a believable performance. Jackie Chan excels especially well in all the varied roles that he's done and unlike people like Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal, he has remained a prominent action/comedy star over the many years he's been around. Seagal, is great in his role as chef Casey Ryback and seems in his element with this role. He shares great chemistry with his co-st...more

Premium Review Under Siege (DVD): One Man & His Boat (1101 words)

Rating:

When a Navy battleship is hijacked by ex military personnel things look pretty bleak from the off; led by ex CIA Agent William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) the men come onto the ship posing as musicians, their aim is to steal the ships Tomahawk Cruise Missiles and they're willing to kill anyone in their path. The ships only hope lies in the seemingly less than capable hands of the ships chef. What the hijackers don't know is that this isn't just a regular chef; Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) is an ex Navy Seal and is highly trained in weapons and martial arts. Casey is locked in the freezer to begin with but once escaping he sets about his mission to bring down ...  Read the complete review

There are essentially two things required as the basis of a decent action movie: A respectable good guy and a respectable bad guy. Under Siege has both: Steven Seagal as the heroic chef/ex Navy Seal, and Tommy Lee Jones as the psychotic '60s rocker. The latter, along with Gary Busey, seizes control of the ship's nuclear arsenal. The head chef, Casey Ryback, is on board the USS Missouri- a battleship on its final tour of the Pacific, and is preparing dinner for the captain's birthday. The second-in-command (Gary Busey), who has apparently put up with "a lot of his shit", later orders him to clear the area as dinner is now being flown in by helicopter. ...  Read the complete review

Let's face it, Steven Seagal is an actor that you either love or hate, and who is hardly likely to ever feature on anyone's "Top 10 Actors" list or mount the Hollywood steps to pick himself up an Oscar. In fact the only award he has ever won is a Razzie (Golden Raspberry) in 1995 as "Worst Director" for a piece of action hokum called "On Deadly Ground" (1994). And yet....There's something about Steven Seagal that gives him a screen presence that is very hard to ignore. Maybe it's the voice that you could use to sandpaper walls, or the hard man stare that would earn him a fortune as a bouncer if the film career ever goes bad. Maybe ...  Read the complete review

One of the first films I ever got hooked on and probably one that is still a favourite today has got to be Under Siege. Probably the best film starring Steven Seagal, I first saw this at my Nan’s, and I think she owns just about every film he did before 2000 on video. Although I think that’s more for when we go up, as I don’t think she ever watches films, just hours and hours of Soaps. Anyway onto the film, The US Battleship, USS Missouri, is due to be decommissioned after its final tour of Duty. Following a Presidential visit, the ship sets sail back towards the US for its final voyage, with only a Skeleton crew onboard. The final voyage just ...  Read the complete review
