Under Suspicion (DVD) ... Morgan Freeman ... / DVD released 23 July, 2001 at Lions Gate Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman star in Under Suspicion, a suspense-filled tale of interrogation--less of a whodunit than a did-he-do-it. Freeman plays Victor Benezet, a police captain investigating the murder of a child, and Hackman is Henry Hearst, a prominent lawyer and pillar of the community who also happens to be the prime suspect. Benezet and Hearst have a history together, and Benezet is torn between showing deference for an old friend and prominent community figure and ruthlessly pursuing a man he believes to be a child murderer. Director Stephen Hopkins spins multiple versions of the same events, popping details in and out as Hearst's story changes. Hopkins also uses the unusual and satisfying technique of juxtaposing the interview room with other locations, allowing Benezet to "follow" Hearst through his movements as he questions him. Under Suspicion also serves up the delicious eye candy of Puerto Rico during the St Sebastian festival, but the real treat is getting to watch two masters such as Hackman and Freeman square off. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

But are things as they really seem? The characters/actors Morgan Freeman plays Benezet with his usual panache. He knows Henry and doesn’t want to be too hard on him to start with – this is well portrayed as the good cop against Owen’s bad cop routine. Premium Review Under Suspicion (DVD): Under the film's influence (459 words)

Wow! That's exactly how I felt when the credits for this opus rolled and I was left reflecting on the film. It is an outstanding film and I am dead glad I chose to rent it (on DVD naturally ;-) **The plot** This film is plot heavy so to make sure you enjoy it as much as I did, I won't give too much away. Basically, you've got Morgan Freeman (who ALWAYS gives his best to a film) and Gene Hackman in the lead roles. Freeman is Capt. Victor Benezet, a cop who's not at his best due to splitting from his wife. So when he gets put on the case of raped and murdered teenage girls he puts all his anger and frustration into it. ...  Read the complete review

Two experienced executive producers, two extremely capable actors. When Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman collaborated to produce this film it should have been a recipe for success. However, despite their solid performances by the end of the film I was left feeling dissatisfied. THE PLOT Hackman plays a respectable lawyer who falls under suspicion of the rape and murder of two young girls after discovering the dead body of one. As the policeman, played by Freeman, questions him his story begins to unravel and his explanations just don?t quite add up. TECHNIQUE The best aspect of this film was an unusual form of direction which I have ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Under Suspicion (DVD): Very Suspicious (286 words)

A film staring Morgan Freeman (Captain Victor Benezet) and Gene Hackman (Henry Hearst) you would think would be a classic. The story line is very good and both actors play storming parts but there is something big missing. The film is very theatrical and maybe better suited for TV rather than the big screen. The film is set in Puerto Rico and there are no main parts being played by Puerto Ricans and hence it looks a bit funny as to why they are on the Island. Basically two young girls (13yrs) have been raped and murdered and Henry Hearst discovers the second one whilst out jogging. He gives his statement, which is full of holes from the start, and it ...  Read the complete review

Introduction I love free DVDs with newspapers. I have no loyalty towards any particular paper; in fact I rarely buy newspapers because I catch up with the news on the internet, but a free DVD that I like the look of will persuade me to buy. And so I ended up with Under Suspicion, free with the Sunday Mail. I liked the look of the film because it starred Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman, two of my favourite actors, and the topic sounded right up my street as well. Unfortunately, there is something missing from this film. The plot Victor Benezet plays a police captain in San Juan, Puerto Rico, investigating the death of two young girls. The second girl ...  Read the complete review

The film starts with shots of a city, which may have been Rio as other reviewers have suggested or a small Caribbean island according to Time Out, but it didn't register with me at the time and it doesn't really matter. The opening shots are alternately speeding up and slowing down, with the opening credits appearing while this is going on, with an interesting variation being the semi-transparant faces of the principal actors appearing briefly at the same time as their name. The opening scene is of Gene Hackman and Monica Bellucci, who plays his much younger wife Chantale, getting ready to go to a charity function. There are meaningful looks aplenty ...  Read the complete review
