Based on an obscure 1970s French offering, director Adrian Lynne's version is pure Hollywood, from its casting of Richard Gere and Diane Lane in the lead roles, to its graceful visual style and even its somewhat unsatisfactory denouement. It's impossible not to watch the film without thinking of Lynne's own Fatal Attraction, although here the gender roles have been reversed to focus on the affair between bored suburban housewife Connie and exotic French book dealer Paul. The obsessive relationship between the two provides the film with its only real frisson. Gere is given very little to work with as the dull cuckolded husband Edward and delivers even less. The film moves rather slowly towards its key plot twist which never really lives up to its promise. On the DVD: Unfaithful may be lacking a little as a film, but this DVD is an impressive package. The film has a rich visual element and the digital picture quality brings out the best in Adrian Lynne's unique eye for detail. The reams of extras include commentaries from director Lynne and the cast, a well put together documentary, interviews, features, deleted scenes and a (superior) alternative ending. Lynne is always good interview value, coming across as a slightly less eccentric Ken Russell, and Lane and Olivier Martinez are both engaging and charismatic. This is quite a powerful film in many ways. It's quite brave in its exploration of adultery, and how being unfaithful can make you feel. Diane Lane gives a powerful performance, and shines above everyone else. Martinez is quite good, needing only to show that he can seduce, and Gere is sufficiently gentle as the aggrieved husband.

This is quite a thoughtful film that explores the psychological effects of adultery, as seen through the eyes of a bored woman who doesn't realise the mental turmoil she will put herself through, and how willpower and selfishness come into play. Unfaithful turned out to be a fairly average movie, not the worst I have ever seen but a long way from the best, it is a drama / thriller about a womans' infidelity with a stranger who she becomes obsessed with and the impact it has on her marriage and the safety of her family. Unfaithful" I have to say is the worst movie I've ever seen with some of the most popular America actors around Richard Gere and Diane Lane, with a brief hilarious cameo by Chad Lowe. How is it awful? Let me count the ways. I saw this film on the telly the other night and was very impressed with how good it was! It tells the story of a typical American couple (Diane Lane and Richard Gere) who live a typical small american home (I am being sarcastic here!) and she meets up with a handsome young man and begins an affair with him, naturaly and predictably, he finds out and there are disastrous consequences all round. This is a film i absolutely adore. I first saw this film back in 2002 when it first aired. Diane Lane and Richard Gere portray a typical American couple living in the surburbs brilliantly.
