Up (DVD)
We decided to go to the cinema at the weekend and after careful consideration, chose "Up" as we are both fans (myself and my other half) of Disney Pixar productions.
It cost us £9.50 each to see this film in 3D which was more expensive than we had expected - having said that, there was a couple in the row in front of us who had taken 6 children along, and bought them all hot dogs so I suppose it could have been worse!
We had assumed that this film would be written in a similar vein to the other Disney Pixar ones, but it seemed different. The film was funny, and there were definitely some laugh out loud moments (look out for the "cone of shame" which really cracked us up!) but I am not sure that I would class it as a comedy overall.
It follows the story of an old man and a young boy. Carl is the old man and from an early age, he wanted to be an explorer, inspired by a famous explorer called Charles Munz. When he met a young red headed girl (Ellie) with the same dream, it was inevitable that they would be together, get married and pursue the dream together.
However, life was not to be that way, and Carl ends up alone in his old age when Ellie dies. Carl is full of regret that they never managed to do all the things that they had planned, and when he is forced out of his home by property developers, he plans the ultimate adventure, to move himself and the home that he shared with Ellie to the place that they always wanted to reach - by helium balloon!
Just before he is able to put this plan into action, he meets Russell. Russell is 8 years old and missing a father figure. Russell is a Wilderness Explorer and is collecting badges, he needs one more, for assisting the elderly. Russell is on the porch when the house starts to float away so is caught up in the adventure.
While trying to reach their destination, Carl and Russell meet the famous Charles Munz but the meeting does not turn out the way that they would expect.
This film is quite emotional in places and touches on subjects which could make the viewer quite sad. It does encourage you to look at subjects that you might not otherwise consider, such as lonliness and loss so perhaps has some useful messages for children, though I would make sure that they are old enough to understand before wllowing them to see this film.
Some good 3D effects were evident though not as many as we had hoped. It was still worth it and I would encourage you to watch it in 3D.
Overall, this was a good film and I am glad that we watched it, though it wasn't what we had expected. If you are particularly sensitive, then you might actually cry!
Summary: Worth watching
