Crowned Review Upstairs Downstairs (DVD): Behind The Green Baize Door. (2437 words)
by - written on 28/06/02 (Very useful, 1715 readings)
Rating:

Have you ever noticed that each decade seems to have one TV series that defines that era? Think back to the 1960's and 'The Forsyte Saga' springs to mind, fast forward to the 1980's and 'The Jewel In The Crown' seems to have been the must-see event, more recently the 1990's yielded 'Pride and Prejudice' as arguably the best historically based programme. Premium Review A piece of family history (112 words)
by - written on 11/11/00 (103 readings)
Rating:

This series first appeared on television in the 1970's. It is the story of well-to-do London family from about 1910 onwards. It tells the story of the Bellamy household and their servants. The talented Gordon Jackson plays the role of indispensible family Butler, Hudson. He is typical of his era as he knows his 'place' and dresses and behave accordingly. The series covers the war years, family disasters, and the social changes that were happening around this period. The costumes are excellent and the acting is good. The series is available on video for around £12.99 (two tapes). If you enjoyed the original series this is worth ...  Read the complete review

by - written on 04/07/00
Rating:

In the 70's, the nation was firmly hooked on the exploits of what happened in an elegant house in Eaton Place in the early 20th century. The novelty of the series was that we saw life for the Bellamy family, the rich owners of the house who lived "Upstairs" and the lives of their servants who lived "Downstairs". Life upstairs was well ordered and sophisticated, tea on silver trays, dressing for dinner and afternoon calls being made by ladies in nice frocks. Life downstairs was frenetic and hard. The servants rising at 5am to ensure the house was clean and warm and ready for the owners much more leisurely lifestyle. ...  Read the complete review
