Whilst being dragged helplessly around a market in Shrewsbury I spied with my little eye something beginning with V. A boxed set of the full mini series first aired in the UK in 1986. I remember it well because I was thirteen at the time and my sister and I would come downstairs to watch it on the only TV we had in the house. A small black and white set with a hoop aerial and a dial to find the channels. I remember the year because the Olympics were on in Los Angeles. We didn’t have a video recorder at the time – not many people in our area did in 1986, so we had to watch it at 11:00pm – 1:00am every night for 5 nights. It was hard to convince our ... "V" was a surprise cult hit in the Uk when people trying to avoid some sports event or other started channel-hopping and found this quirky series. Watching it now, it does feel a little dated; big 80's hair, and cutting edge technology that is now old hat, but it does retain a certain charm which keeps it watchable. The basic story line is that a tribe of aliens arrive on earth promising cures for cancer etc. They appear to be all-good, but people start disappearing and gradually some people begin to suspect that something is amiss. The main characters are a group of resistance fighters who are often outside of the law, and have ... Read the complete review

Imagine the earth has finally been contacted by an alien race. They appear to come in friendship, offering new technological and medical knowledge. They even look the same as us. The Alien visitors come and settle and all appears well. As well as being visited humans are also invited back to the aliens home world to see what it is like. The it is realised that the people that are going to the alien planet are not coming back. It turns out the aliens are not the friendly humans they appear, but in reality are lizards who are processing all the human tourists as food. The film sets the scene and allows humans to discover a 'red dust' which is ... Read the complete review

On trawling through the sci-fi section I was staggered to see the affection this pap is held in.The original series was ok shown on ITV during the Olympics, when the Beeb had sole coverage in 1984. The plot involved mankind's first contact with an alien race. They came in large motherships that looked like lightfittings and offered technology for chemicals. As the aliens looked like us there was no problem. We quickly discovered they were mouse eating reptiles in human masks and they were planning to have us all for dinner. The plot was uncovered by the resistance lead by Mike Donnovan and soon the fight was on.As ever the rag tag band of heroes took on ...
