Disadvantages: Not Dark Enough

The other reviewers on here have given a very good summing up of the movie already, the main thrust being don't let Tom Cruise put you off, and they're right about that. I'm not going to repeat what has been said about the tension being real and the acting being tight, all of which is true. I'd rather say how I think the film could have been better.

That's not to say it isn't a success because it is. All too often, Hollywood thinks a film's historical accuracy is in inverse proprtion to its watchability, but there's no dumbing down here. What I personally would have preferred from this dark movie is ... more darkness. Small groups gathered in dark rooms has that potential, but it wasn't fully exploited. The Eagle's Lair seemed altogether bright and summery, and so it may have been, but couldn't the potential for darkness in a hideout have been explored? There was Wagner in the soundtrack, sure, but there should have been MORE to convey better that sense of brooding menace the film sought to portray.

These are limited criticisms, and should not detract from a worthy and noble effort.
