A true story well worth watching (Valkyrie (DVD))

Advantages: Gripping from start to finish

Disadvantages: Didn't like the way they used there own accents

I'm finding TV a load of rubbish at the moment, it just seems to be repeat after repeat so I find myself watching a lot more films and Valkyrie is the latest one I have seen.

Valkyrie is a film set in Germany during World War two, it's a true story about a group of high ranking German officers and politicians who wish to assassinate Hitler and bring an end to the war using Hilters own plan which he had set in place in the event of his death.. This film is supposed to be a very accurate account of the Valkyrie plot; it shows you just one of the 15 attempts on Hitlers life.

What's it about?
I think most people will know or have herd of this plot, this film tells you it in detail from start to finish.

The story is about a Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) who was injured in an attack when he was based in Tunisia, he was then transferred back to Germany to recover. Whilst he was recovering a group of officers had tried to bomb a plane that Hitler was traveling on, this attempt had failed and the Gestapo arrested one of the men involved so they had to find a replacement which ended up being Claus von Stauffenberg.

It was Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg who came up with the idea of using Hilters own Valkyrie plan to enable them to take over Germany with Hitlers own reserve troops, it basically was a plan that would get put into place if Hitler was ever killed. They had to get the plan re-written it enabled the group of officers to take over Germany and imprison Hitlers closest advisors which would then enable them to surrender and end the war.

It would of course be Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg job to try and assassinate Hitler and he knew that if he was ever found out it would mean certain death of him and probably his family.

What do I think?
I loved watching this film; I find movies based on true stories (especially the war) very interesting. I had herd of this plot before but never really knew much about it, now I realize just what lengths these men where prepared to go to so that they could try and end the war and save there country.

This film kept me on the edge of my seat pretty much from start to finish; it started with great action scenes at the start and gripping tension through the rest of the film. I think Tom Cruise was ok in this film, I do prefer him in his action rolls though, and apparently he was attracted to this part because of his resemblance to the original Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg.

I think the only thing that I found a little odd with this film was the fact that all of the actors where using there normal voices, it was a bit weird watching Tom Cruise in a German uniform but with an American accent, I think that it would have been better if the actors had been using German accents I feel it would have made the film even more real.

Summary: A great film well worth watching and you even learn a little
