When this movie was made it had been a number of years since the vampire in movies had had a really scarey outing. The modern vampire seems to be the touchy-feely kind who has a story to tell and a dark romantic side we are meant to be attracted to. In short, it has been a while since a vampire scared us and many of us fans of the genre had been waiting for one which would. Vampire in Brooklyn is a creation of the prolific horror director Wes Craven with Eddie Murphy as the vampire in question. The trailers and posters for Vampire in Brooklyn really made the movie look quite crappy. In fact, the film is a sort of horror comedy, and not at all an embarrassment for the unpredictable Wes Craven (the director of Nightmare on Elm Street). It's fairly average I think the making of this film could have maybe been a rush job, although Craven's sensibility is good for a few disgusting visual jokes, and Eddie Murphy outdoes himself in three roles, including two where he's virtually unrecognizable. Angela Bassett is good, of course, though she was much better in Strange Days. The big surprise is that the dialogue and delivery are genuinely funny ... Read the complete review
