John 'Scottie' Ferguson was a police officer until one day when he is trapped on the top of a building and after watching a colleague fall to his death and being injured himself, he realises that he suffers from vertigo. Chastened by this shortcoming, he resigns. Then he is approached by a friend who is worried about his wife, Madeleine, who has been behaving strangely. Scottie is asked to follow Madeleine to find out what is going on. Initially reluctant, Scottie soon falls for Madeleine's charms and is determined to save her from whatever ghosts are chasing her. Vertigo is a pretty famous Alfred Hitchcock film. It was released in 1958 and starred James Stewart and Kim Novak with support from Barbara Bel Geddes (who went on to famously play Miss Ellie Ewing in Dallas for a decade or so) and Tom Helmore. John Ferguson (Scottie) is a retired police officer who developed vertigo during a chase when a colleague fell to his death from a rooftop. He has severe vertigo and it causes some complications in his life but he is able to live with it. An old friend from college hires Scottie as a private detective to follow his wife Madeline who he believes is possessed by the spirit of someone who died 100 years ago and on ... Here we have one of his most famous and best-loved films: Vertigo. Starring James Stewart from Rear Window and Kim Novak as his obligatory mysterious love interest, this is another romance/ psychological drama/ thriller, but with a twist. The story tells of John "Scotty" Ferguson, a policeman who if forced to quit after watching his partner fall to his death, and subsequently suffers from a fear of heights. He is given the task of following Madeleine (Kim Novak), whose husband is sure that she is possessed by the ghost of her great grandmother. As he tracks her around the streets of San Francisco, he begins to piece together her mysterious ways, and ... Read the complete review

Vertigo is generally regarded as a cinematic classic. It was released in 1958, and is regarded as one of Hitchcock's most enduring films. It comes mainly from the perspective of John "Scottie" Ferguson, (played by Hitchcock veteran James Stewart) who is a San Francisco detective. (Although, I am not quite sure why he is called "Scottie", because he certainly doesn't speak with a Scottish accent.) He has to retire after a rooftop chase which results in the death of a colleague and his suffering from vertigo, (induced by his near death experience and his partial responsibility for that death). He is asked by Gavin Elster, an old college ... Read the complete review

Synopsis: A private detective is hired to shadow a woman that doesn't seem to be of sane mind, yet there is something darker at foot. Vertigo was released at a time where Hitchcock was at the height of his critical success and commercial fame and funnily enough upon release Vertigo was not a well liked film at all. Most critics found it unrealistic and unlikely, depending solely on an implausible murder scheme committed by a villain whose exposure was about as surprising as waking up in the morning. They thought that the ending was concerned with something else rather than the murdered and thus the killer just gets away. They didn't seem to understand the ... Read the complete review
