Advantages: Classic gore and sex shocker

Disadvantages: Kronenberg also did 'Crash'

Kronenberg is most definitely messed up in the head.

Videodrome looks at a man obsessed with hard core violence, violent sex and sado-masochism.

The film looks at how media has got out of hand, especially relevant with todays 'Reality TV' methinks? The film itself spawned a cult following and created a market for 'Snuff videos' that many of you may remember in the early 80's.

Don't get me wrong, although this film is distinctly provocative and grotesquely violent (at least in its insinuations) it does kick butt in a major way. The film is not easy to watch, although the sturyline lacks the 'twists' of more modern titles, Kronenbergs style makes for often tedious viewing.

Clever Special FX and effective directing make Videodrome one of those films you might watch on a night in by yourself, or with someone that won't immediately dismiss it as a cr@p 'B' movie. It is a film for discussion but don't go and hire it out if you plan on watching it with your new girlfriend, there are some disturbing scenes which squeamish people may find offensive.

You must take this film with a pinch of salt like all Kronenberg films. He is renowned for stimulating thought on Sociological issues, not for making 'Sunday Afternoon' films.

I didn't like Kronenberg's 'Crash', I thought it was just for the sake of shocking. Perhaps we have become hardened to it all? But videodrome was made when Betamax was still in the running and people were just having their eyes opened to what media could actually do.

I love this film, but not as much as I love Existenz.....
