Advantages: No Frills Just A Great Story Well Produced
Disadvantages: Not For The Hide Behind The Sofa Brigade
I am not generally a Science Fiction fan but this sci-fi film of 1960 which is a pretty accurate representation of the The Midwich Cuckoos novel by John Wyndham really hit the spot for me.
If I were to give it my own rating out of a hundred I would score it as 97. I have watched a huge number of films and have only ever seen a couple of "98's" so giving it a 97 is high praise indeed from me.
Now this is going to be a difficult film to describe without giving away the plot. I won't give it away; I will just tell you that it is about a scary phenomenon that afflicts a small village and the attempts of the village to cure the problem. It has one of the best endings you are ever likely to see and sends shivers down your spine when you are watching it.
It is filmed in black & white, it is a British film set in England, runs for 77 minutes and stars George Sanders.
It didn't figure at the Oscars that year but in my opinion may have slipped under the radar. This is in part because there were some heavyweight films made in that period and it was still the golden age of cinema in Hollywood so this relatively low budget non all star cast film didn't get a look in.
If there had been an Oscar specifically for thrilling tension and suspense then Village Of The Damned would surely have won it hands down.
Summary: This Is Now An Iconic Movie In My Opinion
