Although I might be incredibly fussy when it comes to my reading material, I am a bit more broad-minded when I am choosing films. I'm a lot more willing to try something new, perhaps something I wouldn't normally think looked good because there is often a gem of a film out there, and I don't want to miss it! I was in the library (yes, again!) browsing the DVDs and right on the bottom shelf was this little film. I had a quick skim read of the box and decided it was definitely worth a go. Jenna is working as a waitress in Joe's Pie Shop in the deep south of America, but is truly miserable with life. She's married to Earl, as real pig who treats her terribly and ... I love pies, there is no denying it. I am a man from the heart of pie country; that wonderful Eden situated between the Rugby League capitals of St Helens and Wigan. Many a time I have driven into Wigan only to smell the waft of pastry and their meaty innards. One shop in particular is king - Pimbletts. This shop has the best Meat and Potato (or as they are now known Potato and Meat) pies in the country - I have yet to have better. My Granny once said that they should just be called Potato pies as the nearest meat that gets close to them is a sprinkling of an Oxo cube - despite their meatlessness they are still sublime. Imagine my excitement then when my girlfriend ... Read the complete review

++ FILM ONLY REVIEW++ Jenna is a rather downtrodden American female. Working in Joe's pie shop and married to Earl who treats her like dirt, Jenna seems trapped in a world that is not in the slightest bit pleasant. Discovering that she is pregnant by Earl, Jenna vows that her life is to change and it'll be pies that help her. Waitress is a rather odd little film. One could describe it as a romantic comedy but it has a darker side which makes it quite compelling. Never heavy, one is pulled in to watch rather as you would a soap or drama. Morals abound throughout the (just shy of) 2 hours and one is taught that, no matter how bad things ... Read the complete review

I had never heard of this film until about three months ago when i saw it on one of the Sky movie channels and decided to watch it. I couldnt be bothered to get up and change the channel so i thought i would give it a go. Since then, i have watched it about three more times as i think its a brilliant film. Note: written for my review website, ShaunMunro.co.uk, thanks! ~~~ The late Adrienne Shelly's Waitress exudes charm from its first frame until its last, sniff-inducing one - the endearing Southern accents, the incessant mention of pie, and the wild and wacky characters all work in a wondrous, and surprisingly mature concoction. The film revolves around the turmoil of Southern waitress Jenna (Keri Russell), who is trapped in an unhappy marriage to a controlling, abusive husband (Jeremy Sisto), and to make matters is worse, is pregnant by him, with a child that she does not want. Aside from Russell, who is a commanding actress in ... Read the complete review
