Walk the Line (DVD) ... DVD released 22 May, 2006 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Charting the life stories of both legendary musician Johnny Cash and singer June Carter, Walk The Line has proven to be among the most popular music biopics of all time. And with good reason. Spearheaded by two superb performances (which we’ll come to shortly), the film’s main focus is on Cash himself, from his childhood, early successes, eventual troubles through to the legendary concert of Folsom Prison. His journey also takes in drug problems, the tragedy that haunted him and bumpy relationships with the women in his life. Throughout, of course, there’s Cash’s enviable body of musical work, which not only helps provide markers for his story, but makes for an excellent soundtrack to the movie as a whole. As a film, Walk The Line is resolutely formulaic, with a structure that’ll be familiar to anyone who regularly watches biopics of this ilk. What really helps this one stand tall though are Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon. Pheonix is utterly compelling in the lead role, while Witherspoon is back on the form she displayed back in the days of Election. James Mangold’s direction is fine and uncluttered, and while his film clearly chooses which elements of Cash’s life to focus on (there’s certainly far more to know than you get in the two and a quarter hours here), it works extremely well as an entry point into the life story of a great musician. Even the casual viewer will get a lot from Walk The Line, and it may even compel them to expand their CD collection off the back of it,--Simon Brew

Newest Review: ... "The man in black's" journey showing his turbulent relations with both his father and eventual wife June Carter. ... more

... The movie has some of his music but its the story of his life that takes centre stage. The portrayal of the singer by Joaquin Phoenix is very good and credible. In my opinion he shows a lot of depth in this role and manages to sound very similar when singing and performing on stage. Reese Witherspoon excels as June Carter in a role that seemed to be made for her, both in acting and singing terms. I found the life Cash lived fascinating, having started out from very humble origins and ending up living a rock n' roll...more

Premium Review Walk the Line (DVD): Great Film! (341 words)

I will be completely honest with you before watching this film I didn't know too much about Johnny Cash or June Carter. But this film and their journey together really made me believe that some people are meant to be together. The film follows the early career of Johnny Cash, Primarily the story of the love that grew between country stars Johnny Cash and June Carter, it end when they get married. We see him struggle to come to terms with his brothers death, a desperate need to make his parents proud, an unhappy marriage, drug problems and underlying love for June. 'My customers are Christians, and they don't want to hear you singing to a bunch of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Walk the Line - Johnny Cash (330 words)

This was a really great movie and one you should definitely see. It is about the life of Johnny Cash, the famed American country singer. Johnny Cash is played by Joaquin Phoenix and June Carter (his eventual wife) is played by Reece Witherspoon. I did not know anything about Johnny Cash before I saw this and even if you aren't a fan of his music that will not put you off the film. It chronicals his early life as a child (briefly) before he became famous and then his well publicised battles with drugs. The DVD also contains some special features such as audio commentary, 10 deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer. It is rated 12, only ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Walk the Line (DVD): Joaquin the Line (1855 words)

“Walk the Line” was always going to be a risky endeavour. Fortunately for those involved, it has turned out remarkably well, and though there will always be those who quibble about the film, what with the real Johnny Cash being such a legend and all, most seem to agree that the film is a fitting tribute to a genius and a wonderful man. Another film that has truly earned its Oscar nominations this year, “Walk the Line” is a gripping watch. The film is directed by James Mangold, who also directed the abysmal “Girl, Interrupted”, but don’t let that put you off, this film gets six stars out of five. The (very, very, very) lovely Joaquin Phoenix bravely ...  Read the complete review

Ok guys this is my last review before I go on holiday for the week. I never really wanted to watch Walk the Line as a film about the life of Johnny Cash had never really interested me. But after hearing about its Oscar success and the fact it has Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix in it, who are two great actors, I just knew that I had to at least give it a go, and so with some good old vouchers from dooyooI bought the DVD. The Story Well as I’ve just stated Walk the Line is the tale of Johnny Cash’s life, the famous renegade country singer who was a star singer during the 1950s and 60s. The film follows his life from when he was a small boy on ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Walk the Line (DVD): Johnny Cash - Walk the Line (1005 words)

I always loved listening to Johnny Cash when I was growing up. I loved his music from an early age when my Stepdad would have his cd's playing in his study and I would listen through the door! So when I heard they were making a film about him I was thrilled. As much as I loved his music I hadn't taken the time to read about his life etc as I has with other singers I liked. I thought this would be a great insight into his life. For those of you who don't know who he is, Johnny Cash was primarily categorized as a country singer but his music was much more powerful than that. It came straight from the heart and soul and he became a musical legend. He ...  Read the complete review
