Advantages: good action scenes

Disadvantages: predictable

This film stars former WWE wrestling star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who has made a moderately successful transfer into films and while he is mostly associated with this kind of beat them up action thriller he has also managed the odd slightly comic role as well uch as in Be Cool with John Travolta.

However in this film he plays Chris Vaughn a former special forces operative who has returned to his hometown in Washington State to find that there is now a casino in operation and the mill has closed down. He soon discovers that the casino is crooked and with the help of his best friend Ray, played by Johnny Knoxville he decides to run for sheriff and clean up the town in a throw back to the wild west days.

Overall this is a fairly average action film with lots of macho dialogue and a number of plot flaws which given that the plot is paper thin in places tends to leave you questioning whether the script writers really have much of a clue.

Certainly Johnson is convincing in the role as a former special forces operative and he is able to comfortably handle the fight scenes, Knoxville is less cnvincing in the wise talking side kick role and to be honest I just found his character really annoying.

The problem is the whole film is just so predictable, there is the obvious romance side plot which is not at all convincing and the ability of the bad guys to keep coming back for more beatings is just so cliched.

The best way I can sum this film up is to describe it as a straight to C5 sort of film as it is the sort of thing found on that channel alongside the Steven Segal and Chuck Norris films.

Summary: action film
