Advantages: A Lovable Attractive film of the Sixties
Disadvantages: None at all
Waqt ( Time ) - 1965 produced by B.R.Chopra and directed by his brother Yash Chopra ,is a Magnificent film by all standards. It had a huge multi star cast and some of the best picturised songs and a smashing story line. All in all Waqt was a magnum opus that is fondly remembered by Hindi film lovers to this day..
I remember watching this film with my parents when I was very young and all that I remembered about the film was Sadhana, the leading lady gliding around in a embroidered White and Gold Saree with a pink rose in her hair singing a very popular song 'Kaun aaya ke nigahon mein...
I watched it again much later at a morning show , while I was in college and loved the film and the songs. Sadhana was a craze those days and in this film she looked her best a real heart throb..
After that I must have watched Waqt a dozen times , it has become a family favorite now and every now and then we watch this film and enjoy those good old style of film making - a wholly different approach where Romance, music and enchanting outdoor shots took precedence ..
=The story of Waqt=
The film begins with Lala Kedarnath ( Balraj sahni) celebrating his success in business and family life . His wife Lakshmi ( Achala Sachdev) and 3 sons are his precious possessions and he talks to his guests about giving them good education , while one of the guests ,a Hindu Priest philosophically tells him that things do not happen as we plan. It is always better to leave things to destiny , but Lala is confident that nothing can go wrong with his life..
Later that night an earthquake devastates the entire city and Lala's entire life and the family is separated with Lala searching for his wife and children, while wife Lakshmi is looking out for her husband and sons Raja and Ravi while carrying her youngest child Vijay with her..
The older sons Raja and Ravi get separated and fail to locate their parents...
They all grow up at different places with Ravi ( Sunil Dutt ) being adopted by a couple and becoming a defense lawyer in a family where he is loved by his foster parents and sister Renu ( Sharmila Tagore ). Raja ( Raj Kumar ) becomes a criminal working for a rich businessman Chinoy Seth ( Rehman).
Vijay ( Shashi Kapoor) is the only one living with his ailing mother and struggling to complete his education and look after his mother's medical expenses.,
Ravi loves Meena ( Sadhana) , who is the daughter of a Judge and a close family friend of his foster parents . Raja after accidentally meeting Meena , falls in love with her and there begins rivalry between the two.
Vijay and Renu are college mates and they fall in love but social differences threaten the future of their romance..Vijay is compelled to work for Chinoy Seth as a driver and the differences between the lovers widen..
There is greed and murder and the future happenings bring the brothers together once again but this time fighting against each other without knowing their relationship..
=My views about the film=
As I wrote earlier I love this film. According to me it is one of the most lovable and entertaining films made in Hindi. I can write volumes about the film and its stars...
To begin with Yash Chopra has made this into a very interesting and a very attractive film, that can be watched over and over again . The sets are beautiful with most of the film shot in snow capped landscapes of Shimla, Kashmir and on the outskirts of Bombay - not the crowded over populated streets of Bombay , but the more sophisticated attractive parts of the city, in Old colonial Bungalows and lush gardens and lagoons..
The film has an impressive star cast - Balraj sahni, Sunil Dutt, Raj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Rehman, Sadhana, Sharmila Tagore, Shashikala, Achala sachdev, Madan Puri...
Balaraj sahni is a Class actor who I tend to compare to Humphrey Bogart in looks and carriage. He is a great actor and in Waqt he gets an excellent role . A very popular song 'Yeh mere zohrajabeen' ... is picturised on him right at the beginning of the film where he serenades his wife ...
Sunil Dutt and Sadhana look absolutely great together, their screen chemistry is amazing. Sadhana needs a special mention - she was the epitome of stylish sophistication and grace. Hers was the look of the modern 60's with the petite trimmed down fashion trends of the west. Sadhana was feminine, glamorous and had a tremendous screen presence and the audience loved her..
Waqt is one of her best films other than 'Mera saaya ' and 'Woh Kaun thi' which I had reviewed earlier.
Her long plaited, chiffon saree clad look was a rage with the youngsters and even today while watching her one can feel the magical quality of her screen presence.
Sharmila Tagore is another hot favorite of the 60's , with her dimpled looks and svelte figure she was a craze. In Waqt she has a good role and she looks great with Shashi Kapoor, but, she pales in front of Sadhana who has better role and makes a greater impact..
Sunil Dutt, the gentleman actor, as always has given a wonderful performance. So does Raj Kumar- he has many punch lines in this film that have become very popular with the Indian film goers.
Rehman has a full fledged villainous role and he is good at being bad ! Madan puri as his side kick has performed equally well .
Music is another great attraction of this film . The composer is Ravi, a regular with the Chopras. The film has some of the most popular songs by Asha Bhonsle, Mannadey, Mahendra kapoor and Rafi..
The list of songs
~~~~~~~~~~~
1, Waqt se din aur raat - Mohammad rafi
2, Yeh mere zohrajabeen - Manna Dey
3, Kaun aaya ke nigahon mein - Asha Bhonsle
4, Din hai bahar ke - Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor
5, Hum jab simatke aap ke - Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor
6, Maine dekha hai ke - Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor
7,Chehre pe khushi chaa jaata hai - Asha Bhonsle
8, Aage bhi jaane na tu - Asha Bhonsle
All the songs are very melodious and beautifully picturised in some of the most picturesque outdoor locations in Nainital and Kashmir. My own favorite is ' Kaun aaya ke nigahon mein ' picturised on Sadhana , waiting for Sunil Dutt , where she looks absolutely beautiful in a White and Gold embroidered chiffon saree . Long plaied hair and that pink rose behind her ear - Raj kumar who watches her later aptly comments " Aap ki har cheez khoobsurat hai ' which means 'Everything about you is beautiful..One does feel that way while looking at Beautiful Sadhana in this film..
Another song that is great to watch and listen to is ' Aage bhi Jaane na tu, where a lot of action takes place through the song - fabulous picturisation where the entire star cast come together .It never fails to impress me to this day even after watching it a few dozen times.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this film to everyone, a great entertainer, best of the sixties musical. suspense, romance...
At 3 hours plus it is a very long film , but the length is not a disadvantage, it only goes to show the director's caliber - making it interesting and watchable inspite of the length and the many characters ..
Summary: Definitely a film worth watching
