War Of The Worlds (Special Edition, 2 DVDs) ... Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning ... / DVD released 14 November, 2005 at Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Box set, PAL, Special Edition / Despite super effects, a huge budget, and the cinematic pedigree of alien-happy Steven Spielberg, this take on H.G. Wells's novel is basically a horror film packaged as a sci-fi thrill ride. Instead of a mad slasher, however, Spielberg (along with writers Josh Friedman & David Koepp) utilizes aliens hell-bent on quickly destroying humanity, and the terrifying results that prey upon adult fears, especially in the post-9/11 world. The realistic results could be a new genre, the grim popcorn thriller; often you feel like you're watching Schindler's List more than Spielberg's other thrill-machine movies (such as Jaws or Jurassic Park). The film centers on Ray Ferrier, a divorced father (Tom Cruise, oh so comfortable) who witnesses one giant craft destroy his New Jersey town and soon is on the road with his teen son (Justin Chatwin) and preteen daughter (Dakota Fanning) in tow, trying to keep ahead of the invasion. The film is, of course, impeccably designed and produced by Spielberg's usual crew of A-class talent. The aliens are genuinely scary, even when the film--like the novel--spends a good chunk of time in a basement. Readers of the book (or viewers of the deft 1953 adaptation) will note the variation of whom and how the aliens come to Earth, which poses some logistical problems. The film opens and closes with narration from the novel read by Morgan Freeman, but Spielberg could have adapted Orson Welles's words from the famous Halloween Eve 1938 radio broadcast: "We couldn't soap all your windows and steal all your garden gates by tomorrow night, so we did the best next thing: we annihilated the world." --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

... great special effects and a good well structured story. Ray Ferrier is a divorced Father of two who's wife is now pregnant with her new husband, Ray is really not father material and does enjoy the bachelor lifestyle a little too much for his kids to be involved, when they stay with him for a couple of days they're all forced together when Alien Invaders start exterminating us en masse. Now you notice I said "exterminating " I think hollywood really got this wrong when they dropped the "the" from th...more

Premium Review War Of The Worlds (Special Edition, 2 DVDs): Tom Cruise understated despite alien invasion (1180 words)

HG Wells' The War Of The Worlds was the first book I ever read. The story of Martian invaders in huge mechanical tripods laying waste to Victorian London fascinated me from a very young age. I have always wanted to see a faithful version of the novel, set in England in the 1890s. Sadly, the money men in the film industry don't share this ambition. The War Of The Worlds it seems is never going to return to its roots and will instead be updated periodically for the popcorn crowd with an American setting. For this reason I avoided the latest Steven Speilberg twist on the famous story for a long time. Speilberg had the talent to make a good version of the story but when I ...

Divorced dockworker and father of two, Ray Ferrier, is on baby sitting duty. With his wife and her new partner off for a short break, it falls to Ray to look after his teenaged son Robbie, and his young sister Rachel. Ray dotes on his children, but there is friction in the relationship between him and son Robbie and things do not bode well for a peaceful weekend. When a strange storm hits the city, Ray and his neighbours venture out into the garden to marvel at the dark, swirling skies and fierce winds that seem to defy the laws of physics. A series of lightning strikes hit the city, not far from Ray's home and, curious as to what is happening, he leaves ...

There are many people who are put off films due to the scriptwriter's decision to reset the story in a different era. This is obviously an accusation that can be levelled at this new production of the H.G.Wells classic, War of the Worlds. The book is set in late Victorian England, and so to cast the film in modern America is and all the cultural trappings and imagery that that entails is almost to re-write the book entirely. What we have to remember here is that this story is one that has evolved into something more that the original tale and has developed a mythology all of its own. Orson Welles's radio production of it, in 1939, was performed as contemporary news ...
