This epic film was absolutely panned by critics when it was released back in 1995, but having seen it again recently, I think some of the criticism was unjust. Most of it seems to have centred on the actions and attitude of Kevin Costner, and the exorbitant cost of constructing floating sets and the fact that the extended version of the film runs close to three hours! Perhaps the problem is that Costner and the film might be trying to take themselves a little bit too seriously. Maybe he got carried away with the success of ‘Dances with Wolves’ and the superstar status that it brought. This film could definitely have done with a bit less being spent ... "Did you see anything out there?" asks Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn), enquiring about the long since forgotten dry land in the 1995 film of Waterworld. Directed by Kevin Reynolds the film also stars Kevin Costner, Chaim Girafi, Tina Majorino, and Dennis Hopper, and is an action adventure based in a bleak future where the Earth has flooded and is (apparently) covered with water. The human race has survived by building rusty and improvised floating cities and ships. They are plagued by a group of men called 'Smokers' who attack, steal, and kill at every turn. People now live in constant fear of attack, exacerbated by both the lack of the resources and the fear of ... Read the complete review

Waterworld, as everyone has said, was ferociously attacked by the critics when it came out in 1995, and I have to say that although much of it was justified, something about the film made me enjoy it just a little bit. It cost around $175million to make, mainly due to its huge floating sets and over-the-top action scenes. This was by far the biggest budget of its time until Titanic came along, and Waterworld remains one of the top 5 most expensive films ever made. However, despite all the bad press, it was definitely not a flop such as, say, Cutthroat Island, and it grossed about $255million worldwide. It stars Kevin Costner as "the mariner", a ... Ba-Boom-tish. Sorry, had to, it said snappy title ! Water World, I don't know why it didn't do very well. It's not the best film in the world, but it's a nice treat. The film entails that in the future, the polar ice caps melt, flooding the Earth, forcing the survivors to adapt to life on the ocean waves (toot-toot!). Kevin Costner stars as the nameless outcast who sails the oceans on his catamaran. He has adapted to the environment a little better then everyone else, he has gills and webbed feet..... If you've seen Kevin Costner films in the last ten years (bar Robin Hood), you'll be glad to hear that his ... Read the complete review

A mutant sails the world's seas. The world is all ocean, now that the ice caps have melted or some such nonsense. The only enjoyment I got watching this film was finding all the parts that made no sense whatsoever. Fresh water is so scarce that he has to pump his urine through a machine that separates it out into fresh water. This wouldn't work on the sea water? He dives down to collect soil for growing things. Soil with a huge salt content, which would be useless. It took millions of years for humans to evolve slightly from a simian common ancestor, yet this guy seems to have developed perfect gills suspiciously quickly. Oil is plentiful, so all the baddies motor ... Read the complete review
