Advantages: Amazingly funny, Mike Myers, Dana Carvery
Disadvantages: Tia Carrere's acting
Just one of the many witty jokes crammed into this often underrated film. This line is used when Wayne is ordering Chinese take-out. Mike Myers plays Wayne Campbell, an ordinary guy living in Aurora. He hosts an "excellent" local TV show called Wayne's World with his best friend, Garth Algar (Dana Carvery). Wayne happens to meet Cassandra (Tia Carrere) lead singer in Crucial Taunt along the way and manages to lure her in with buckets of charm. Wayne's one ambition is to do Wayne's World for a living, and when a hot-shot TV executive (Rob Lowe) wants to buy the show Wayne is more than happy to agree. Yet, Wayne and Garth both have lingering doubts about the honesty of the TV executive. He seems to be moving in on Cassandra and changing things about the show. Things start to go wrong for Wayne as he discovers the path to success is not going to be an easy one... Wayne and Garth were originally characters on Saturday Night Live, the show which has spawned hundreds of excellent comedians over the years, and looking at the earlier material, the writing was always on the wall with these two as they didn't have one bad sketch. This film and the sequel are my favourite comedy films of all time, surpassing the Hot Shot movies, Austin Powers, So I Married An Axe Murderer and even (God forbid!) the Airplane films. If that doesn't convince people who haven't seen either of these films to run out and rent these films then I don't know what will. The one downpoint of these films is Tia Carrere. Her acting is TERRIBLE. Whatever possesed the people in charge to cast her will always be a mystery. At some points she attempts to play guitar and even to someone like me who doesn't play guitar it is blindingly obvious she doesn't know how. But luckily this is the ONE downpoint and in fairness it's a small enough part not to spoil the film. This is just plain funny. It never takes itself to
o seriously and has some of the funniest lines ever. Take for example this line, where Wayne just got a present of a gun rack: "A GUN RACK?I don't eve have A GUN, let alone many guns which would necessitate an entire rack. What the hell am I going to do with a gun rack?" Rent it, make popcorn and wet yourself laughing.
