There are many films that have achieved cult status over the years, many quotes that are ingrained into the English language and then there are those unforgettable scenes that once you've witnessed, you'll never forget. You only need to mention the ear in Reservoir Dogs and those familiar with that gruesome scene will be cringing, or perhaps grinning with delight depending on how sadistic they are. WAZ (correctly pronounced or should I say said "Double you Delta Zee") is a really disturbing addition to the world of the vile horror thriller genre becoming known as Torture Porn. Why the porn element I'm uncertain but Torture Porn movies is a category used to describe movies the likes of Hostel, Saw, and the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes. A few of these manage to be quite good, and in the case of WAZ, is actually a share better than the last two Saw instalments in particular. I was left home alone for a few nights recently when everyone else went off on holiday. So I decided to have a movie night by myself. I tried doing microwave popcorn, twice, which was a disaster (unpopped kernals first time, burnt second) and perhaps I ought to have gone for a less serious film as about halfway through this one I think a kernal randomly decided to pop (does this really happen?!!) and I thought someone had just tried to shoot me in the head and dived halfway across the living room almost smashing into the coffee table. Tom Shankland directs this crime and thriller movie WAZ. The plot centres around the bodies discovered in darkened streets which have had an equation written into them. Nobody knows what the equation means or why people are being killed.
