... guess! WAZ depicts the attempts of Detective Eddie Argo (Stellan Skarsgård) and his new partner (Melissa George) to discover who is behind the trail of bodies lining their city streets. They're left with only one clue - an equation, which is somehow linked to Jean Lerner (Selma Blair), a rape victim who is herself attempting to deal with her trauma. What differentiates this from similar films is that it's not so condescending to its audience. It doesn't pose the rather uneven and silly morality that some of the Saw ...more

Crowned Review WaZ (DVD): What WaZ the Point? (857 words)
by - written on 17/01/09 (Very useful, 133 readings)
Rating:

There are many films that have achieved cult status over the years, many quotes that are ingrained into the English language and then there are those unforgettable scenes that once you've witnessed, you'll never forget. You only need to mention the ear in Reservoir Dogs and those familiar with that gruesome scene will be cringing, or perhaps grinning with delight depending on how sadistic they are. WaZ (pronounced W delta zee and marketed in the US under the title The Killing Gene) is one of those films which has hinged its whole success on one particularly poignant scene. But did it have anything to offer beyond a graphic torture scene involving a broken ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Saw Never Had The Guts To Go Here (1249 words)

Rating:

WAZ (correctly pronounced or should I say said "Double you Delta Zee") is a really disturbing addition to the world of the vile horror thriller genre becoming known as Torture Porn. Why the porn element I'm uncertain but Torture Porn movies is a category used to describe movies the likes of Hostel, Saw, and the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes. These gross out up close horror thriller movies often show the things other movies would not, for example when a man has a nail rammed under his finger nails 98% of the movie would pan off leaving the horror and the pain to your imagination, Torture Porn movies making up that other 2% would not only show you the result but ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review WaZ (DVD): One of the most underrated films of the 00s (321 words)

Rating:

note: appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room also With every Saw that gets released, there is a thriller that goes straight to DVD and sadly never finds an audience. A few of these manage to be quite good, and in the case of WAZ, is actually a share better than the last two Saw instalments in particular. It's a smarter, more robust film that doesn't rely just on its gore to get by - this is a clever noir that packs a visceral punch and also a rather killer twist ending that I beg you to try and guess! WAZ depicts the attempts of Detective Eddie Argo (Stellan Skarsgård) and his new partner (Melissa George) to discover who is behind the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review WAZ/W Delta Z/Devil's Algebra/The Killing Gene (1738 words)

I was left home alone for a few nights recently when everyone else went off on holiday. So I decided to have a movie night by myself. I tried doing microwave popcorn, twice, which was a disaster (unpopped kernals first time, burnt second) and perhaps I ought to have gone for a less serious film as about halfway through this one I think a kernal randomly decided to pop (does this really happen?!!) and I thought someone had just tried to shoot me in the head and dived halfway across the living room almost smashing into the coffee table. I'm not saying this film was scary as such, but certainly violent and therefore could understandably make people jumpy! Anyway, I'd ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review WaZ (DVD): WAZ (306 words)
by - written on 29/08/09 (Very useful, 6 readings)
Rating:

Tom Shankland directs this crime and thriller movie WAZ. The plot centres around the bodies discovered in darkened streets which have had an equation written into them. Nobody knows what the equation means or why people are being killed. Stellan Skarsgard and Melissa George play Detective Eddie Argo and Helen Westcott respectively as the oficers who try to find the serial killer. Along the way they discover that the victims are been given a choice of killing one of their loved ones or been killed themselves. Selma Blair plays Jean a woman who has suffered from the tragedies and in constant contact with the officers. However it is discovered that she may ...  Read the complete review
