Advantages: Good Acting, Entertaing Concept, Top Production
Disadvantages: None
We're Not Married is a really entertaining film considering it's age and black and white appearance. The Mrs and I settled down to watch it last week as the latest in our Marilyn Monroe box set collection. You can buy this separately from Amazon for just £5.97 though which is well worth it for the price.
The story starts out with an American official marrying six couples before he is officially sworn into office. Years later, during divorce proceedings of one of these couples, the truth is uncovered. And so five more couples need to be told that their marriage isn't valid. In modern times the story would just revolved law suits and compensation but this story was set in a time when it was a real social stigma for couples to live together and have children out of wedlock.
I like the way the film follows the five different couples to see what they're up to and to address whether or not they actually want to remarry. In one case, a soldier sent to war has to go AWOL and rush home to marry his 'wife' quickly because she is pregnant and he doesn't want his child born out of wedlock. It's really funny as you can imagine the carry on that goes with a soldier trying to get married in secret trying to shake his bosses off his tail along the way.
In another case, the couple only ever married to get a gig as a radio personality couple and are thrilled to bits to discover they're not married at first because they're sick of each other. Will they realise there are worse things in life than each other? You'll have to watch it to find out!
The production is quite advanced for the era I think and the acting was very professional all round. The cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor, James Gleason, Louis Calhern and Paul Stewart - all of who are excellent actors even by modern expectations. The fact this film is shot entirely in black and white really doesn't stop this from being a thoroughly enjoyable film to watch. The Mrs and I enjoyed it equally though I could see this appealing to more women than men generally speaking.
