Advantages: Very very funny. Isla Fisher is scary and brilliant.
Disadvantages: Laughs die down towards the end
John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) are two thirty something business partners and best friends. When wedding season comes around there's nothing they enjoy more than crashing weddings. They get a whole summer of free drink, free alcohol and scoring with the bridesmaids. It doesn't matter what sort of wedding either - if it's happening then John and Jeremy are there. The last wedding of the season they decide to crash is one of the biggest. William Cleary's daughter (Christopher Walken) is getting married and since he's the Treasury Secretary its quite a deal. Putting on their usual façade the boys blend in with the guests until John sees bridesmaid Claire (Rachel McAdams) and it's love at first sight.
Never one to outstay their welcome at weddings so as not to give away their identities, Jeremy is keen to go, but John makes them stay and they end up going to the family's house and spending the weekend. Another bridesmaid Gloria (Isla Fisher) who seems slightly crazy, becomes infatuated with Jeremy and soon he has another reason to want to get the hell out of there. Both the boys get themselves into some very hairy situations during the course of the film - much to the audience's amusement of course.
So it's one for the boys (the frat pack comedy) and one for the girls (the romantic element) so all in all something for everyone. Vince Vaughn does his usual talking at the speed of light thing here, which is always funny to watch. You have to wonder how he gets the words out that fast without stumbling or laughing at himself. Owen Wilson's John is more of a smooth talking calm and collected character which gives a good balance. Both have played similar characters before in a lot of their movies but that doesn't make it any the less enjoyable.
The supporting cast are also all valuable assets here. John and Claire have good chemistry together and even Jeremy and Gloria have chemistry - something Jeremy wasn't even expecting! Rachel McAdams gives sweet sincerity to the role despite being quite vulnerable. Isla Fisher steals every scene she's in with her over the top, bridesmaid from hell character - this was her first major movie role and it really got her noticed in Hollywood. And Christopher Walken, well, does what he does with every other role he's ever had - nails it. The perfect father of the bride - likeable yet intimidating. Will Ferrell pops up in a minor role - what would a frat pack movie be without him - but I have to say compared to Vaughn and Wilson he really is just a run of the mill comic actor - he's not that great. Watch out for Jane Seymour's semi nude scene with Owen Wilson as well!
This is a laugh out loud buddy comedy with a bit of romance and a lot of laughs thrown in. A lot of laughs! Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are at their best and are a joy to watch on screen together. They bounce off one another's energy and jokes and between them the film just flows really well. See it!
Summary: A great buddy comedy that will have you doubling over
