Welcome to Collinwood (DVD) ... Isaiah Washington ... / DVD released 29 September, 2003 at Lions Gate Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / A nifty little film about a gang of would-be crooks and a heist that goes awry, Welcome to Collinwood rises above most other caper movies due to a strong script, clean and inventive direction, and above all an outstanding cast: Sam Rockwell, William H Macy, Isaiah Washington, Luis Guzmán, Jennifer Esposito, Patricia Clarkson, and several other great character actors have such chemistry, wit and sheer talent that it's a pleasure to watch them scheme, wriggle, and woo each other through an elaborate plan that's doomed from the start. George Clooney also appears (and coproduced the movie). --Bret Fetzer

It's quite obvious from very early on that these guys don't share many brain cells between them som it comes as no surprise when everything starts to go wrong. Most of what goes wrong you can spot a mile off but there are some surprises as well. Much of the comedy is of a slapstick nature and it keeps on coming as blunder after blunder occurs. At the start Cosimo is in jail where a life prisoner tells him of the perfect heist. The only problem is that he needs t...more

Premium Review Welcome to Collinwood (DVD): Would You Take The Fall for $15,000?? (827 words)

Another boring Sunday night at home and the decision to watch a film seems like the only option. So into the DVD collection I go and pull out a fairly recent addition to my collection, Welcome to Collinwood. I’m not entirely sure what it was about this film that made me buy it, I’d hardly heard anything about it however now that I’ve watched it I’m quite glad that I did take the gamble on it. A petty criminal Cosimo (Luis Guzman) is caught red handed stealing a car and ends up in prison. Where he finds out about a Bellini (A Big Job), from a lifer in the pen he needs to find a mellinski to take the fall for him and he's willing to pay $15000. So he sets his ...  Read the complete review

Oh how good it is to finally actually live in a city - all of a sudden I've found myself living 10 minutes away from a Cinema that steers clear of the mainstream cinematic releases and aims to bring the Public some films that they may not see elsewhere - and that usually leads to some good watching - well at least it has for me over the past weekend, which culminated in me watching Welcome to Collinwood this afternoon. So a brief idea of what the film is then eh? well its a comedy but not your average type of nowadays comedy (i.e. American Pie, Road Trip and Not Another Teen Movie). The film surrounds a gang of small-time crooks who?ve been given details of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Welcome to Collinwood (DVD): Five Guys. One safe. No brains! (785 words)

I was interested to watch Welcome to Collinwood for a couple of reasons. Firstly because George Clooney is in it and secondly it is a comedy likened to Oceans Eleven which I really enjoyed. I obtained my copy from the Swapshop site and last night sat down with my husband to watch it. We did enjoy it but I'm not sure that it was quite what I was expecting. The film was made in 2002 and was directed by Joe and Antony Russo. I think the tagline for the movie really sums it up - Five Guys. One safe. No brains! (I have to confess that I have stolen this for my title too!). The five guys in question live in Collinwood a small town where little happens and where ...  Read the complete review

First off – where’s Collinwood? Answer - It’s a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, in the U.S. But this is not a leafy, woody suburb, no - more of a faded, dingy railway town that's seen better days of employment and better days of, well, just about everything. None of which is that relevant, except that it all helps you to understand how the characters in “Welcome to Collinwood” could be so desparate, so hopeless, and so, well, plain idiotic at times. This is a low-budget comedy, but the fact that it comes from Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney's Section Eight production group (see also "Ocean's Eleven" this year's ...  Read the complete review
