Advantages: Floats your boat girls

Disadvantages: It has to end

I have just sat down and enjoyed a film without interruptions, the kids gave me no hassle and the phone didn’t ring. The film I have watched is light hearted, easy on the brain and the eye and above all a good old-fashioned comedy with a love interest of course.
What is this film I hear you ask? None other than “What Women Want”. I hope you enjoy reading my review as much I enjoyed watching it.

WHO STARS IN THIS FILM?
Mel Gibson (yummy)
Helen Hunt (blonde pert boobs and gorgeous – bitch)
Bet Midler (a brief but funny role)
Alan Alder (Mash fame for all you under 30’s)

WHAT IS THE RATING?
It’s a 12 which means it’s suitable for persons over 12 years and over. Yeah right, my three watched it with me and they are aged 7, 5 and 2. There’s no bouncy boobs or flash of bums, no naughty words just a small russling in the sack so to speak. I would say trust your own judgement. I cannot see why this never had a PG rating, beyond me this one.

WHERE TO BUY IT?
As its been out for a while, its reduced in price big time. I paid £2.99 in Woolworth’s but Amazon stock it as do DVD direct and Ebay. Its even cheaper on VHS at a mere £1.99.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
A very relaxing 121 minutes.

WHO MAKES THE FILM?
It’s another Warner Brothers offering, written by Nancy Meyers if you are interested. I’m not I just wanted to watch Mel Gibson but there you go, I’ve added that bit for all you film buffs.

SO WHATS THE STORYLINE?
The story begins about the life of Nick Marshall (played by gorgeous Melly baby) and he is the ultimate playboy with an ego to match. His mother was a Las Vegas showgirl and whilst he was growing up, he was spoilt and smothered by all the other showgirls around him. Nick was an only child and his mum gave him many “uncles”, some which showed him the wrong end of the road.
Whilst working as a director for an advertising company in Chicago, he has the women swooning at him and the men worship him. Married before and now divorced, his neglected teenage daughter comes to stay with him whilst her mother is in honeymoon. Nick is oblivious to her feelings and she treats him with the respect he deserves.
Whilst getting over the good news his ex wife has now re-married, Nick feels he is the ultimate employee and will certainly be given the office on floor 41 and the title of Creative Director. Life is on the up or so he thinks.
Wrong! After listening to the MD (played by Alan Alder –wow has he aged) waffling on a bit, he is given the surprising news he hasn’t got the job but some woman called Darcy Acquire will effectively take over that position and be above Nick. Shock, horror.
Dacry (played by Helen Hunt) makes her entrance into the boardroom and Nick tries to appear calm and collected even though he’s boiling inside. He wants her out and he will do anything in his power to get her out and have the job he deserves.
Darcy is on a power drive to win the contract with Nike and the team have to think like a woman. This means to gain some feeling into their needs and project it into the campaign to win over Nike.
Nick looks mortified when she gives the staff a pink box each with the contents of a lipstick, push up bra, leg wax, tights, silver balls that I don’t really know what they are used for, mascara and a pregnancy test. They have to take the box home and come up with ideas to promote women.
This is where the freak accident happens that gives Nick his mind reading powers but only over women and female dogs. Whilst he is cross dressing (to get the feel of things), he slips on these small silver balls, lands in the bath with the hair dryer coming down on top of him. Nick gets electrocuted, not enough to put his lights out but enough to give him the gift.
At first he hates it, even resorting to a shrink played by Bet Midler for advice. For once he actually knows what the women in the company think of him, most of them want to get into his pants but the odd one or two have little niggles over his bad jokes mainly. Over time though he uses it to his advantage and gets used to the idea he can tap into the female mind, this means poaching the idea that Darcy Macquire had for the Nike campaign and advert.
He gets to the board with his presentation before Darcy does and though basically the same, she still has no idea he can read her mind. Darcy looses and in effect looses her position and leaves the company.
Nick in the meantime has fallen in love with her and when he hears she has left the company, sets out to find her and tell her what he has done. In between looking for Darcy, he manages to loose his power again by a lightning strike in China Town.
On his way back to find Darcy he has to console his daughter who has been dumped by her boyfriend at the Prom for not wanting to sleep with him and his mates! What a rat. The poor girl is heart broken and Nick for once shows he is a devoted dad whilst they talk in the ladies loo.
Eventually at 1 a.m he appears at Darcy’s new apartment and confesses all, including the bit where he says “I’m in love with you”. Darcy promptly sacks him but they share a passionate embrace.

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST BIT?
There are quite a few rib ticklers in this, but the best one is when Nicks daughter arrives back at her dads flat to see him wearing nail varnish, mascara, black tights and a turquoise bra in his hand. Her new boyfriend is with her as she wanted to introduce the pair of them. Imagine the look on their faces.

ANY SAD BITS?
A few but not where you have to grab the Kleenex.
As Nick has this special mind reading ability he also changes and becomes a better man. For example the poor suicidal messenger girl he rescues and by giving her the job he turned her down for originally, boosts her spirit and her life is on the turn around.
There is also a part with a neurotic waitress at the coffee bar where Nick confesses he is gay just to please her. I wont say anymore as I am trying not to give too much away.

LOVE IT OR BIN IT ……..
I most certainly loved it. I loved the way Mel Gibson danced with Helen Hunt, the way he kissed her hand and the way he embraced her. Prince Charles wants to be Camilla’s tampax , well I want to be Mel Gibson’s codpiece. This guy knows how to get my juices flowing.
I’ve always been a fan of this most talented actor but boy he oozes sex appeal like only Sean Connery did. I came down to earth with a thud when the titles appeared on screen; I was almost Darcy Macquire then reality hit me when my old man asked if I want omelettes for tea.
I just cannot believe Mr Gibson has seven children and remained with the same woman through out. This is one lucky lady and she was blessed the day he crossed her path.
Get yourself a copy girlies, switch off from every day life and enjoy the pleasures of Mel Gibson and his firm buttocks. Not sure your other half will enjoy is as much but just as the title says it’s “what women want”.

Summary: Sex on legs on a saturday night - yes thats Mel.

I watched this when it was on the BBC a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised, I wouldn't have expected it to be my cup of tea. Mel is aging very well, isn't he? ;-)
