Advantages: Great laugh
Disadvantages: Too long
What women want is an old fashioned romantic comedy. The man who starred as a kilted warrior in Braveheart and wielded death-dealing tools in Lethal Weapon has a totally different type of role. Mel Gibson plays Nick Marshall, a heavy-drinking, bum-pinching advertising executive. He thinks he is about to be promoted but then his boss (Alda) recruits rival exec Ashley (Helen Hunt) instead, to boost the flagging performance of the company. Nick's babes-in-bikinis style of advertising is fast running out of steam and Ashley is determined to target intelligent women and bid for business advertising wonderbras, leg wax and panti-hose. Nick struggles to come up with campaign ideas for the modern woman - but then he has a freak accident involving a bath, a hairdryer and vodka that leaves him inspired. He wakes up from a daze to find he can hear women think!!! And out of the minds of babes comes some pretty freaky stuff. Stuff which helps him claw his way back to the top of his job ladder and fall in love with new boss Ashley - but not before he has cleverly sabotaged her career. This is Mel's funniest performance ever. It's a delight to see him use his immense screen charm to create comedy and romance.Helen Hunt does a top job of playing the career bitch from hell, who underneath has a warm, squishy heart. This is a chick flick that any bloke with half a crumb of sensitivity and a love of a good laugh will enjoy. Watching the transformation of Mel from sexist oik to every woman's ideal mate is hilarious. The gags are good and the only downside is that the movie is just a bit too long for this type of comedy. But it is perfect date-fodder - excellent for a night out with the one you love, or the one you wouldn't mind getting a chance to love!!! No kilts, no guns - just lashings of warm-hearted comedy that isn't trying to be innovative . It just amuses and entertains you. Which is a rare but welcoming th
ing these days.

- 04/02/01 I'm sorry to do this but I read this "review" in the Sun yesterday. It's almost word perfect to the one on page 44 of Sat 3rd fed written by Nick Fisher. Why did you bother to copy a review from one of the most widely read papers in Britain? |
