Advantages: Funny in parts, original idea
Disadvantages: Bit cheesy
Well before I went to watch this, I thought that I'd read some other opinions first but from what I read, it seemed that there was a mixed opinion. So, I thought....I better see it myself and come and tell all of you what it was like... Lets start with an explanation of the story. Most people who are reading this now probably know this already so please bear with me :) Basically, its about this man who thinks he's gods gift to women - not surprising though, considering that they do whatever he asks of them. He works at this advertising agency and is hoping to land the job of Creative Director until a successful businesswoman named Darcy (umm.. can't remember her second name)played by Helen Hunt, gets the job instead. Of course Mel Gibson's character is very annoyed at this, but a freak accident involving a hairdryer allows him to hear women's thoughts and therefore he can get revenge on Helen Hunt and hopefully get her job. At the same time though, Gibson has to try and reforge the relationship with his 15 year old daughter to whom he has not really played a proper father to. Well, I won't go into anymore because it's quite self-explanantory - this is a Romantic Comedy so Gibson and Hunt are obviously going to get together. Now on to the good bits and the bad bits of the film : - ORIGINALITY - In terms of the concept of a man being able to read women's thoughts in a film, it seems quite original. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think this idea's ever been done on another film before. However, in terms of the love story bit - thats just very cliche, so don't expect anything new in that department. COMEDY - Some bits in this fim are genuinely funny. Favourite parts of mine include when Mel Gibson is trying out all those ladies products and then his daughter and boyfriend walk in! I'm not that keen on slapstick stuff, but it is quite amusing.
Some of the women's thoughts are also very funny, especially as Gibson's charatcer actually finds out that he isn't as special to women as he thought he was. ACTING - The acting of the two main stars was quite good - I suppose it really depends on if you like Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. The thing is, there was nothing really that taxing for these actors to carry out which is why there was nothing specail about their acting. One thing I can say though, is that they carried out the cheesy bits VERY well. There were some parts where you really had to fetch the sick bucket. SOUNDTRACK - If you like Frank Sinatra, you'll love it!! In conclusion I would say that this film is not bad, but not that good either. It's ok if you've got nothing else to do and fancy a trip down tot he cinema but don't expect yourself to be moved by this film at all. Everyone will find some parts funny but at the same time I think everybody (even the real hopeless romantics) could find some overly cheesy parts! Therefore, if you don't mind spending £5 to go and see this film, then see it! But I'd personally wait for it to come on video first. However, if you're planning for your husband/boyfriend to get an insight into a womans mind then maybe you should get down to your cinema right away!!!

macutmore - 03/04/01 Good opinion. Considering some of the other movies around at the moment, though, this one stands out as being the best of the bunch! |
