Advantages: Very funny, light hearted and entertaining

Disadvantages: None really, except my usual gripes about the storyline and ending

Just what exactly is it that women want? I bet that a lot of guys went to see this film in the hope that Mel Gibson would be able to give them the answers. However, I have to say that even before I went to see it, I already knew what a particular female dooyooer wanted.

For me, on that cold, snowy windy Thursday night when I went to see the film up here in the sunshine capital of Britain I wanted Mel Gibson, Maltesers, popcorn, some sun and a funny movie. Unfortunately as I live in Glasgow, Mel works in Hollywood and the cinema had run out of Maltesers, I had to make do with some popcorn and a funny movie.

I have to say that the film is indeed hilarious and for those of you who are in two minds about seeing it then I would definitely recommend that you go if you want a good laugh.

As with most movies in this genre, I find that the best clips are always shown in the trailer but What Women Want also has a few other good lines and scenes throughout. Despite the impression that the trailer gives, this is not a "rolling-in-the-aisles-screwball-comedy" as such. Instead, it is entertaining, humorous and is essentially a romantic comedy.

But does Gibson really know the answers to figuring out what a woman is looking for? In this film he certainly seems to as the storyline sees him being able to hear the thoughts of women and, more importantly, what they think about him.

He plays Nick Marshall who is an advertising executive and thinks he is God’s Gift. When he finds out that he has he missed out on a big promotion, he vows to get his own back on his new female boss Darcy MacGuire (played by Helen Hunt). She had been hired so that the company could aim more advertising towards women as, being a male, Nick could not possibly know about female-directed adverts.

Somewhere along the line, he has a freak accident, gets electrocuted and wakes up being able to hear the thoughts of women. You may be wond
ering if this is a curse or a gift but Gibson certainly regards it as a useful tool to further his career and get his own back on his new boss.

I did enjoy this movie but I have to say that I found the storyline to be a bit weaker that I thought it would be. The film centred around Gibson finding out what his female work colleagues and acquaintances really thought about him which, although funny, perhaps needed a bit of diversification.

To be fair, there were two "sub plots" but these only played a very minor part in the overall story. The first one involved his teenage daughter who reluctantly had to stay with him for two weeks while her mother was away on honeymoon. This led to a few humorous scenes but seemed to get forgotten about after an hour or so. The other sub plot was a little more serious and involved a suicidal office junior at the advertising company. This particular storyline only came into it’s own very briefly near the end of the film and actually had a key scene which determined how the film was going to end. Nevertheless, I did feel that these plots seemed to be just slotted in, almost as an afterthought and they were referred to when there was a break in the main storyline.

However, maybe I am just being picky as the writers probably didn’t want to detract from the main idea of Gibson having a whale of a time listening to what women were thinking about and at the same time trying to oust his boss, get the promotion and not fall in love with her. The ending wasn’t too bad but again, as with a lot of films that I’ve seen recently, you just want an extra few minutes to bring it to a proper close.

If you are a fan of Gibson then you should definitely check it out as you won’t be disappointed. It is an entertaining, light hearted movie and is also perfect for a girl’s night out at the cinema. Guys will enjoy it too and will even get an insight into what leg waxin
g is all about and how to apply lipstick the Mel Gibson way. As the film has a 12 certificate, younger teenagers will also get the opportunity to see it and will probably find it quite hysterical too.

And for all the gals out there then it is worth going to see even if it is just to find out how good Gibson’s legs look in a pair of tights!

Everything else I have seen so far about this film has made me not want to see it but that last paragraph makes me wonder....

Actua lly, I'm not very keen on things that tell you what women want as they always seem to be such a long long way away from what I want and I usually like to think of myself as a woman...

Well, thanks for clearing that up, I thought this was one of those 'self-help' films and nearly went to see it :)
