~~~~ The Plot ~~~~
If you don’t want to know much of what happens in the movie then I’d stop reading this now if I where you!! You have been warned 
Mel Gibson plays Nick Marshall – he’s a bit of a mans man and thinks he knows what women want. He does pretty well with the ladies actually and thinks life is a bed of roses. He is expecting a job promotion and is all set to move to the 44th floor with his assistants! He gets called into his boss’s office and is told the job has gone to a women! He is none to pleased about this and feels a bit miffed about it. He is informed the job has gone to a lady called Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). So off he goes to sulk in his office until the meeting, where he will meet the famous Darcy Maguire. The new Creative Director.
The meeting goes well and Darcy gives everyone a little box or kit, inside the box is: Anti Wrinkle Cream, Moisturising Lipstick, Bath Beads, Quick Dry Nail Polish, an At Home Waxing Kit (ouch), Wonder Bra, Mousse, Pore Cleansing Strips, Advil, Control Top Tights, Mascara, Home Pregnancy Test and a Visa Card. She asks everyone to come up with a marketing idea for one or more products.
That night Nick is enjoying a glass (bottle) of wine and decides to check out
the contents of the kit and see if he can come up with any good ideas. He is alone at home and isn’t expecting his daughter back for a while. She is staying with him because her mom is off on her honeymoon and Nick is left holding the baby or rather not so much a baby anymore as she is 15 and has an 18 year old boyfriend! Anyway off Nick goes to the bathroom to test out some of the products in the kit. This is a really hilarious part of the movie.
How many times have you seen Mel Gibson with Nail Polish on and a pair of control top tights?
So there he is with nose cleansing strip on, mascara and nail polish and he is about to test out the at home waxing kit and this doesn’t go well. I have to say just watching him rip that strip off his leg made my eye’s water in sympathy. OUCH!
He moves onto the tights and manages to ladder them really well but does get them on, lol. He is about to put on his Wonder Bra when his daughter arrives home (with her boyfriend)!!
She is absolutely mortified and her boyfriend looks well amused. Nick informs them that he is road testing some products for work and tries not to get to embarrassed. I think the daughter’s name is Alexandra but I am not to sure – if anyone knows, let me know and I will add it. But for now I’ll call her Alex.
So after the shock of seeing her Pop in drag, Alex storms off to her room.
This leaves Nick in the bathroom and he decides to dry his hair as he has Mousse in it. This is where he has a little accident!
He has the hair dryer in the bathroom and is drying his hair when the bath beads fall to the floor and he is sliding all over the place and end up getting an electric shock because he falls into a bath full of water with the hair dryer!!
I must say it really is stupid to have a hair dryer in the bathroom anyway! Don’t you think?
So there he is out for the count and is awoken the next morning b
y his cleaner. He then discovers he can actually hear what she is thinking and he thinks he is going nuts! Off he goes to work and he finds that every women that passes him is thinking about something or other and he is getting really freaked out. When he gets to work he discovers that some of the women he thought liked him, think he’s a jerk!
He goes to see his shrink and that’s where we meet Bette Midler – she is only in the movie for a short while but does a good job! She tells him he is unique and thinks he has a gift, so off he goes to listen to all the women he knows. A bit sly if you ask me but it proves to be invaluable to him where Darcy Maguire is concerned. Reading her mind makes it easy to pinch her ideas and also make a good impression on his boss.
That would be fine if he hadn’t started to fall for her and she for him, awww really mushy and sweet. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I do love a good slushy movie. He also uses his new gift to improve his relationship with his daughter too. He helps her shop for her prom dress and when the big night arrives he even manages to save the day when it all goes horribly wrong for her.
He starts to give women more respect too. He stops asking his assistant to do everything for him and actually does a few of his own errands. He becomes more sensitive and even has a little bit of a cry at one point, which I have to say I thought was hilarious.
~~~~The Bottom Line ~~~~

Well I loved this movie and so did my man, so that proves its not just a chick flick. It is really fun to watch and has some classic moments to. I really enjoyed seeing Mel Gibson doing a little dance sequence to a Frank Sinatra song. I had no idea he could dance so well and was really impressed. Helen Hunt plays her role brilliantly and she to has some really funny lines. The movie has a real feel good factor and also makes you believe that for those men who are “mens m
en” they really can change if they want to, lol.

The movie was intended to give a message I think and that was to listen to others more and not be so self centered. I may be wrong but that’s what it was giving me the impression of! If you’re a Mel Gibson fan like me then you’ll love this movie. I much prefer him in comedy and light-hearted movies. I was really impressed by the standard of acting and there wasn’t a hammy scene to be had and the cast was excellent. Some great tunes in there to.

If I had to pick on the movie and find a down side I would be pushed as it really was a fab watch but I suppose I would have to say that the only thing that bugged me was it only lasted 126 minutes and that’s not such a big thing after all.

Go and rent it now, it’s a really funny, emotional and witty movie. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Great review. 120-odd minutes is pretty much standard for a film, but I guess you could watch Mel forever, eh?
