Advantages: Great script and watchable factor is high
Disadvantages: Quite long, v. American 80s
This is a bit old now, but is still great as a watchable film with a loved one.
It was a big romantic film of the late 80s, just before Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail etc....and it includes famous scenes such as a fake orgasm in a cafe, and the theme about 'whether or not men and women can ever really be friends'....
It's a well-made film about relationships in general, and the twists and turns of the two central characters in their off-on relationship in particular. It's quite memorable and entertaining. Some scenes just summarise aspects of love so well.
Billy Crystal is a bit Woody Allen-ish, and you have to get used to this, but his character grows on you, and Meg Ryan is very good at these light comedy parts.
The device where old married couples sit on a sofa and reflect on their long relationships - where we can see the love still sparkling between them - is also lovely.
A bit of a classic this film really, about a rather relevant subject.
It does take awhile to get used to the very American city-based characters.
Summary: Billy Crystal vehicle too
