Advantages: Excellent plot, very funny
Disadvantages: None
This is a amazing film and one of my all time favourites. I just watched this film for like the hundredth time there now and i am still nowhere nearly fed up of it. The story is a beautiful one and it is very sweet. The first time that i watched this which was quite along time ago. I remember thinking even then that it was probably one of the best that i would ever see. It kept me guessing what would happen and i loved the two main leads which were chosen for it. The way that they meet at the beginning is quite comical as are their initial reactions to each other which were even more so. To say that Sally greets harry with hostility at the beginning would be a understatement of great proportions but they have great chemistry and watching it you can really believe the story involving them and get wrapped up in it.
They both are brilliant in it and really make the film enjoyable to watch. The plot for this is brilliant and is one that is realistic to life to because sometimes things like this do happen in reality. The film is funny in so many ways and there is a lot of laughs to be enjoyed thanks to it. The storyline is very good and there is not one part of this film were it dips in its brilliance. It remains interesting and grabs your attention from the start to the finish. I cant see anyone not liking this film although i know that everybody is different. I think that this is wonderful and that it would be incredibly hard not to like.
Although i say it did keep me guessing which it did, there was still a few parts which were undeniably quite predictable but this film was so brilliant that i really couldn't have cared less about that when i was watching it. The end to this film was brilliant and was quite surprising as well but it was certainly a very good one. This has a great balance of comedy and romance and neither of the two outweighs the other too much. The storyline sweeps along strongly and entertainingly and never fails to maintain its greatness. There is no bad starts or less than good areas to be seen in this. This film leaves you excited as to what is going to happen and if your reaction to it is in any way similar to mine.
You will have your hopes up as to how it is going to end and you will be hoping it ends a certain way. This is delightful and it is a feel good film. It makes you smile and there is even parts that a lot of people could relate to themselves. I believe that this film is not strictly a girly film and i think it will be equally as entertaining for men to watch as it would be for women. Harry is very funny and although the story is a very romantic one. I think that there is a lot of parts which they can enjoy as well such as the friendship with Harry and his guy friend and some of the parts including them.
I also think that most people regardless of weather they are male or female. Will find the situation with Harry and Sally amusing and i doubt that there is many who wont laugh when it gets to the famous orgasm scene which inspired my review title. Special Effects? I dont recall any in the film although "if there is" then i cant believe i missed them because i have watched this so many times lol. Saying that i really don't watch films for special effects or pay much attention to them myself. In my opinion this film doesn't require for any special effect or fancy things "to be added to it" at all because it couldn't be any better than it already is and it certainly doesn't need anything to jazz it up.
This explores Harry and Sally's friendship well and it is true to life in how unpredictable that friendships can be. The storyline is put across very well "it is easy" to understand and never is it confusing. I really like that about it because i particularly hate films that leave me confused and wondering what happened and thankfully this doesn't. I think that it is interesting and quite intriguing watching how Harry and Sally's friendship develops. It has that magic that only a few romantic films have ever had and the soundtrack is absolutely fabulous. I found that i liked every single song used in the soundtrack and that doesn't happen a lot because i am very picky when it comes to music but with the amazing songs included in this. I believe it would be hard not to like it because the music is brilliant, it goes perfectly with this film and really fits in with each part of the story.
This is the sort of film that i believe is a classic and i also think that anyone who has already seen it will enjoy taking a sentimental and entertaining revisit back to it. To watch it once again or if your like me then you may even be watching it for the millionth time lol. The question that this film asks is weather men and women really can be just friends or if sex will eventually get in the way and seeing how this turns out makes for one very entertaining film. I wouldn't say that the idea isn't one that i have seen used previously because i have seen it before but i have never seen it used quite so humorously, wittily and entertainingly. When Harry Met Sally Makes the idea its own and puts it across the best that i have ever seen a film do so.
SALLY ALBRIGHT
Meg Ryan is just as brilliant in this as she is in all of her other films. This is to the same standard as the rest were such as city of angels, you've got mail. Meg plays the role of Sally Albright she is very convincing as Sally and very funny to. She brings the character to life in a way i don't think any other actress maybe would have done quite as well. Some of the conversations, no actually most of the conversation's her and Harry engage in are very humorous and interesting to watch. Sally is very sensitive and is taken a back quite a lot of the time by harry's bluntness and seemingly one tracked mindedness. Its funny because at the beginning she seems very annoyed by him and how he acts. She even seems uncomfortable in his company but she seems intrigued as well.
I think it would be hard to show so many reactions to one person and show all of them as convincingly as she managed to and it didn't even seem as if she was trying overly hard either. I think Meg was very daring in the orgasm scene and i think most people would have been embarrassed if they had tried that or been in the room in which it took place lol. After some consideration i have decided that in my opinion this film is her best one yet and in my opinion City Of Angels was her second best. I also loved that film but i prefer the character she plays in this to that of the one she played in city of angels because Sally is a lot more funny and entertaining were as the person she played in City Of Angels was quite serious and the film as a whole was a lot more of a serious and intense one in general. It appealed to me mainly due to the spiritual side of it and it was outstanding, well except for the end because i really didn't like it. I would recommend watching it as well although I think i prefer light hearted romantic comedy's, and Meg Ryan fits that genre perfectly.
HARRY BURNS
The wonderful Billy Crystal plays the role of Harry, when Harry first meets Sally they don't hit it off and the next time they meet he is married. There is a long gap in-between times before they really connect and become friends. Billy is an amazing actor and i liked all of the other films he starred in as well. In my opinion he brings a very unique sort of humour to the film. Harry is a sarcastic, quite dark humoured man and he seems the total opposite of Sally. Billy is very believable as Harry and really makes his character come to life. Even though he seems uncaring at times he has a warmness about him as well and is actually quite sensitive at parts. He is mostly quite macho but when he needs to be sensitive. He is and he is convincingly so. I think that Billy is quite a bit more open to all kinds of roles were as Meg excels in the romantic comedy's.
QUOTE FROM THE FILM
Harry Burns -You realize of course that we could never be friends.
Sally Albright - Why not?
Harry Burns - What I'm saying is ... and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.
Sally Albright -That's not true. I have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.
Harry Burns - No you don't.
Sally Albright -Yes I do.
Harry Burns - No you don't.
Sally Albright -Yes I do.
Harry Burns -You only think you do.
Sally Albright -Your say I'm having sex with these men without my knowledge?
Harry Burns - No, what I'm saying is they all want to have sex with you.
Sally Albright -They do not.
Harry Burns -Do too.
Sally Albright -They do not.
Harry Burns -Do too.
Sally Albright - How do you know?
Harry Burns - Because no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her.
Sally Albright - So, you're saying that a man can be friends with a woman he finds unattractive?
Harry Burns - No. You pretty much want to nail 'em too.
Sally Albright: - What if they don't want to have sex with you?
Harry Burns - Doesn't matter because the sex thing is already out there so the friendship is ultimately doomed and that is the end of the story.
Sally Albright - Well, I guess we're not going to be friends then.
Harry Burns - I guess not.
Sally Albright: - That's too bad. You were the only person I knew in New York.
THE SOUNDTRACK
This is just some of the faboulous songs to be heard on the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack. I think that each and everyone of them is brilliant.
* "It Had To Be You" performed by Frank Sinatra.
* "Our Love Is Here To Stay" Performed by Louis Armstrong and Harry Connick Jr.
* "Don't Pull Your Love" Performed by Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds.
* "Ramblin' Man" performed by The Allman Brothers Band.
* "Right Time Of The Night" performed by Jennifer Warne's.
* "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" performed by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
* "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" performed by Bing Crosby.
MY OPINION
I adore this film and if i had to choose my top ten films this would probably be number two on the list. The music is perfect, the actors and actresses are superb and the whole film is brilliant. In my opinion it is definitely one to add to your dvd collection. I think that most people who have seen it will agree and i believe that those who have yet to watch it. if there are any are in for a treat because this is really good. There is nothing missing from this film and every minute of it is interesting and entertaining to watch. Another two people who really added to the film were Jess played by Bruno Kirby (Harry's friend) and Marie played by Carrie Fisher(Sally's friend) They were also well thought up characters to this already excellent film. Not many films can be watched more than once and still be as good as they were the very first time that you seen them. I believe that this really is and no matter how many times i see it. I always want to see it again.
REASONS THAT I LOVE THIS FILM
* The story based around harry and sally which is interesting, sweet and lovely.
* Meg Ryan because she's an excellent actress who has been in a lot of good films.
* Billy Crystal because he is brilliant actor who also has a lot of other good films.
* How effortlessly funny it was.
* The idea for the film which couldn't be any better.
* There was not one part of this which i could say was boring or bad.
* The fabulous soundtrack which is loaded with brilliant songs.

- 25/10/09 It did seem quite fresh at the time (I'm so old I can remember the original release). Pity Meg Ryan had to make all those diminishing-returns varients on it, and that she turned out to be a bit of a loony ;-) |
