I hadn't seen When Harry Met Sally and understood it was one of the modern greats so I thought that I should watch it when it was recently on Sky Movies. As I watched this on TV this is a film only review.
Harry is leaving college for the summer and needs a ride home. Luckily for him his girlfriend has a friend who is going the same way. Sally is unimpressed by Harry from the moment she saw him. She wanted to get on the road and he was too busy kissing his girlfriend and then they have a lot of clashing opinions during the journey. Once home the pair part and do not keep in touch.
However over the following years Harry and Sally have a number of chance encounters, however Sally's dislike for Harry remains strong and they do not form a friendship until many years down the line....
I had very high expectations of this film as I had heard so much about it over the years. I really enjoyed the film and would definitely watch it again.
The characters were both very loveable despite them both having certain characteristics that were slightly annoying however I found that this added to the humour of the film as these characteristics often caused conflict between the pair eg. Harry doesn't like the way Sally is always extremely particular when ordering food stating she wants this but not that, dressings on the side etc.
It takes the pair a long time to actually form a friendship and I did feel as though I was willing them on each time they met prior to forming this friendship however the amount of time that passed allowed both of them to become more mature and to realise how well they could actually get on.
I enjoyed the plot. I liked the fact that there were two equal main characters as it meant there was always plenty going on in their lives. The plot did flow well but I found myself enjoying the second half more than the first simply because the first half just shows snippets of their lives but the second half has more continuity. The film did have the ending I expected but there were a few moments in the film where I was beginning to wonder if this would actually happen!
The acting in the film was very good and I enjoyed watching the pair together as the on screen chemistry was realistic and very heartwarming.
The film was released in 1991.
It stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as Harry and Sally.
It runs for 96 minutes.
Summary: Good film
