We’ve all seen a few swords drawn in Japan over the years and this Asian Extreme film won’t be the last to flash the steel. But what I like about this particular one-winner of the Japanese 2003 Oscar for best film-is the way it brings you the everyday life of the Samurai assassins by fleshing out the people under the kimonos as well as the legend. All too often it’s just a lot of swishing razor sharp blades, rolling heads and not so clever ancient sayings, although there are a few rolling heads here if that’s your thing.
