Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman star in this lighthearted drama. Natalie Portman plays a young pregnant soon to be mother, Novalee Nation, who is dumped by an irresponsible boyfriend at an Oklahoma Wal-Mart.
Left with no money and not knowing anyone in the town, she secretly lives in the WalMart where everything that is taken by her e.g. food, clothing is carefully recorded in a little notebook, all of which she intends to repay when she has the money.

Things take a turn for the better when one stormy night, Novalee gives birth to a girl in the Wal-Mart and from then on becomes somewhat of a celebrity where her baby becomes known as the Wal-Mart baby.
In this town, she finds support from strangers who offer her a place to live and just about share their lives with her. Ashley Judd who plays Lexie, a nurse in the local hospital developes a close sisterlike relationship with Novalee. She herself having been through lots of hard times especially when it comes to the men in her life.

Novalee later finds success when she discovers her talent for photography whereas her irresponsible ex-boyfried (because of his self-centred nature) finds nothing but trouble and misery while haunted by his guilt to Novalee. Novalee also finds love in a local librarian by the name of Forney played by James Frain.

Where the Heart Is is truly a heartwarming drama. Both Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd give great performances with an equally famous supporting cast i.e. Sally Field, Stockard Channing and Joan Cusack. A must see for all who love a sentimental, weepy type of movie :).

It also goes to show that the best things in life sometimes do come when you least expect it.
