This does not harm the film in my opinion but for me it did not add much other than quirkiness and to some extent Lynch just making sure everyone knew it was one of his movies. From other reviews, it appears that these references are not random, and if you can interpret them, then I would imagine this film would come in easily at five stars. Unfortunat...more

Premium Review Wild At Heart (DVD): 'You got me hotter than Georgia asphalt!' (1301 words)

Rating:

David Lynch he's a bit weird. Nicolas Cage well he's a bit weird too. You see, at the point this film was made in 1990,Cage was far from being the big box office pull he appears to be now. He was in fact a bit of an oddity having previously selected roles such as ''H.I'' in The Coen Brothers ''Raising Arizona'' (1987) whereas Weird Uncle Lynch was basking in the out and out cult ''success'' of Twin Peaks. It is often considered that Kyle Maclachlan is the posterboy of Lynchville thanks to ''Blue Velvet'' ''Dune'' and the aforementioned ''Twin Peaks'' but then ''Wild at Heart'' came along and it blew my mind. The Basic Story:- Based upon the ...  Read the complete review

A violent, sexy road movie based on 'The Wizard of Oz'? It could only be David Lynch... Just when everybody thought 'Blue Velvet' was the most violent and explicit film ever, David Lynch released 'Wild At Heart', with even more violence and sex. However, no matter what Joe Public may think, Lynch's films were possibly the most distinctive cinematic visions of the 1980s. 'Wild At Heart' follows two young lovers, Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern), as they flee from a contract killer, hired by Lula's wicked-witch mother. The film is typically episodic, divided by the weird places, scenarios and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Wild At Heart (DVD): Another fantastic Lynch film. (253 words)

Rating:

As always, David Lynch is on top form, and Wild at Heart is yet another stunning film added to his list. Lynch as always has managed to create and craft a unique blend of bizarre visuals, strange and akward characters, a unique and individual story line, popped them all into his cauldron, added a touch of transcendental meditation, lots of coffee, and out popped this gem. I cannot rate this film enough. If you haven't already seen it, do so. Nicolas Cage as Sailor is absolutely fantastic, Willem Dafoe's character as Bobby Peru is disturbing but excellent, and Laura Dern (a Lynch regular) as usual is superb. The film focuses around the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review This here's a snakeskin jacket... (289 words)
by - written on 31/07/00 (Very useful, 79 readings)
Rating:

Probably David Lynch's most accessible film, for all the grotesque violence (Willem Dafoe's head blown clean off, Cage splattering a guy in an early flashback), a rather trivial and soft-centred riff on the road movie, 'The Wizard of Oz' and Elvis Presley, with superb performances, some outstanding jokes, and the usual Lynch mix of naked ladies and weird imagery. Sailor Ripley (Nic Cage) gets out of prison intent on hooking up with Lula, his lover (Laura Dern), but her psychotic mother (Diane Ladd) and assorted gangsters and hitmen (Willem Dafoe, J.E. Freeman, a hairy Isabella Rossellini) are intent on splitting the couple and, if at all ...  Read the complete review

Wild at Heart is a strange concoction from the highly acclaimed director David Lynch. In this film, he directs a road movie of sorts, where a young couple are chased because the mother of the girl does not want them to be together. This means that they are moving fairly constantly to different places. The strange concoction comes from Lynch's crazed idea of inserting references to the Wizard of Oz every now and again throughout the film. This does not harm the film in my opinion but for me it did not add much other than quirkiness and to some extent Lynch just making sure everyone knew it was one of his movies.
