Advantages: inventive
Disadvantages: at times a tad too generic weird Americana
A violent, sexy road movie based on 'The Wizard of Oz'? It could only be David Lynch... Just when everybody thought 'Blue Velvet' was the most violent and explicit film ever, David Lynch released 'Wild At Heart', with even more violence and sex. However, no matter what Joe Public may think, Lynch's films were possibly the most distinctive cinematic visions of the 1980s. 'Wild At Heart' follows two young lovers, Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern), as they flee from a contract killer, hired by Lula's wicked-witch mother. The film is typically episodic, divided by the weird places, scenarios and characters that they meet. I felt that 'Wild At Heart' was not as successful as some of Lynch's previous films, such as 'Eraserhead'. Indeed it often felt like he was consciously trying to recapture the magic of 'Blue Velvet' by being willfully weird and compromising structure. Nevertheless, it's still exciting and at times bewildering, but that's all part of the spectacle.
