Wild Wild West (DVD)

Description: Genre: Action & Adventure / Theatrical Release: 1999 / Director: Barry Sonnenfeld / Actors: Will Smith, Kevin Kline ... ... more
Wild Wild West (DVD) ... / DVD released 21 February, 2000 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Wild Wild West, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black, Get Shorty), was one of the box-office smashes of the summer of 1999 but was raked by critics and embraced by audiences. Based on the 1960s TV adventure show that starred Robert Conrad, this film re-imagined Secret Service agent James West as Will Smith, adding Oscar-winner Kevin Kline as his sidekick, agent-inventor Artemus Gordon. President Ulysses S. Grant puts West and Gordon on the trail of malign genius (and former Confederate soldier) Dr. Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh) in a story about racism, partnership and world domination. The special effects are lavish, even garish, but not all that special; they're not enough to elevate a mundane and familiar plot. Even Branagh, playing a man who only exists from the waist up--literally--can't find the juice in this lumbering affair. Still, the fast-talking team of Smith and Kline is a nimble one. Smith's affable charm and Kline's subversive wit win many points, though not nearly enough.--Marshall Fine

... tough critic generally and can look past a films flaws if it's generally well-made. Well it isn't absolutely terrible - it can actually be quite entertaining here and there, Mr Smith does a great job with the role and there are a few amusing moments. But it just has too many naff scenes and really bad 'no-no' ideas like certain characters in drag for an example. And it wasn't funny like the classic scene in Stardust either. Just rubbish and awkward. I didn't hate this movie like a lot of people, but I can see why it w...more

Crowned Review Cowboys... definetly! (1507 words)

Rating:

The Wild Wild West was a Western TV series set in the 1860's. The series aired for a total of four seasons from 1965 to 1969. It told the story of two characters Jim West and Artemis Gordon, played by Robert Conrad and Ross Martin respectively although these were no run of the mail cowboys. These two were slightly different, the reason for this because the writers wanted a new angle to scope the show with, at the time the spy-genre was at its peak in the cinema with James Bond and on the TV with The Man from Uncle. In actual fact they were employed by the American Government as the first Secret Agents in history in a new Department that President Grant had created. So ...  Read the complete review

The Flintstones...The Avengers...The Fugitive...Maverick...The Brady Bunch...Sgt. Bilko...Lost In Space...Charlies Angels... ...and so on, the list of Hollywood movies which have been made based upon old television shows, especially from the 50's and 60's is an ever growing, and seemingly never-ending one. There is a bandwagon here to be jumped upon and its seems that every Tom, Dick, or Spielberg is willing to jump upon it in the puruit of a fast buck acheived by playing on people's nostalgia. Wild, Wild, West may not bring too many thoughts immediately to mind, but its based upon the 60's US television show which ran for 5 years and was rather ...  Read the complete review

Directed by – Barry Sonnenfeld Starring – Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek Length – 106 minutes This film sounds all too good doesn’t it? I mean you’ve got the director of ‘Men in Black’ on board here. Plus a great cast. Let’s not forget the special effects (something that’s essential in every summer blockbuster!). And then there’s the story… just what is the story anyway? Set in 1869 we find that the President of the United States of America is in need of help after he finds out that ‘mad-man’ Dr Arliss Loveless (Branagh) has kidnapped all of ...  Read the complete review

What a wild wild disappointment. Will Smith has not done another Men in Black with this film(though i do like the song). This film is sort of like the sequel to Men in Black since it stars the same actor and is directed by the same director. This hasn't made a good film. The film is quite amusing if you look at it at a very loose way,but other than that there is not much more than that going for it.The film is based on the TV program of the same name.James West (Will Smith) is out to get Dr Arliss Loveless who is planning on creating the Disunited States of America. With Artemus Gordon(Kevin Kline) he goes out to stop this diabbolical mad man and has to face an eight ...  Read the complete review
