Set in London,1969 as the age of the hippy comes to an end Withnail and I tells the story of two out of work actors. Withnail, played by Richard E Grant, and I (real name Marwood), played by Paul McGann, decide to take a break from London with a holiday in the country. However, their time in the peace of the Lake District turns out to be far from relaxing. Richard Griffiths co-stars as the flamboyant Uncle Monty and gives us some of the greatest quotes in British cinema. This was Richard E Grant's debut film and he shows us his prowess here. Withnail and his friend Marwood, the 'I' of the title, are two out of work actors living in a scruffy flat in Camden. Their main way of getting through life is to drink copious amounts of alcohol, accompanied by occasional drug use. After several episodes of paranoia, Marwood decides enough is enough, they both need to get out of London for a while, and suggests that they stay at Withnail's uncle's cottage in the Lake District.
