Released in 1987 'Withnail and I' is often regarded as one of the greatest comedies of all time and is probably quoted more often than The Bible. It has even spawned its own drinking game for the strong-willed and weak-brained. Although it is advisable to miss out the lighter fluid! Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann were both given their big breaks in this movie and played Withnail and I (Paul Marwood) respectively. Both unemployed actors during the 60's they spend their time slowly pickling themselves in copious amounts of booze, popping pills and the aforementioned lighter fluid but are given the chance of spending a week away in a country cottage owned by ... I was introduced to this film by a friend when I asked why he kept shouting 'Scrubbers!' out my car window. The film essentially is about friendship. Based in the late 1960's on the lives of two unemployed actors who, following an amphetamine binge, decide a trip to the countryside would be invigorating. What follows is a hilarious and distinctly different blend of British humor and wit than what I have ever seen, with the potential for quoting seemingly random dialogue by Richard E. Grant rivaled only by 'Borat' In his guide to America. This film was made on a low budget, however this has by no means affected the quality of the film, it helps ... Read the complete review

Being a recent convert to DVD's I was browsing the Internet for something to add to my somewhat limited collection. Unfortunately there are not really many films that I want to buy on DVD, at least none that I don't already own on video. The extra features that are often provided with this new format can be interesting, but rarely worth the extra expense of purchasing a film twice. So I was really pleased to stumble across this old favourite of mine. Withnail and I is the semi autobiographical tale of Bruce Robinson, the films' writer and director. The extra features include a documentary on the making of the film, including interviews with the crew, cast and ... Read the complete review

I admit that until last week I hadnt even seen "Withnail and I", and so I finally decided to give it a watch after hearing many people comment on what a classic it was. I knew that I'd enjoy this film, but I was pleasently surprised that a comical film like "Withnail and I" would have such a poignant and quite sad ending. The film focuses on two down and out actors Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and Marwood (Paul McGann) who are truly fed up with their dull and gloomy lifestyle of London in 1969. They finally have had enough of their squalid and freezing cold flat, and cannot even contemplate on attempting to make a start on the ... Read the complete review

Don't let the fact that this is such a favourite with drama students put you off. It is that very rare thing in modern cinema - a brilliant British film. Withnail (Richard E Grant) and his flatmate Marwood (Paul McGann) are struggling actors in 1969 Camden Town. Disillusioned by unemployment, excessive alcohol and drug use, and the rigours of London life, they decide to "rejuvenate" in a country cottage owned by Withnail's Uncle Monty. But this doesn't turn out to be quite the relaxing holiday they had planned... Although WITHNAIL & I is hilariously funny, what makes it special are the unexpected moments of profundity intermingled with the humour. So ... Read the complete review
