Advantages: Hilarious
Disadvantages: Bad language and therefore not suitable for little ones
What can I say; it's my favourite film by a long way. It was brought to my attention by a friend who strongly recommended it. I don't normally laugh out loud at films, but this film had me in stitches. It is the sort of film you watch over and over again, and find it difficult to stop quoting.
The film is set in London in the dying ages of the 60's and features two ex-public school actors, "Withnail" and "I", who haven't had jobs for months. When the pair discuss getting onto the television Withnail's reply is, "the only thing I could get on is the ******* news!" As you can tell the film is littered with very strong language. The film is narrated as such by "I", a man reduced to paranoia through drug abuse. The film will at certain points cut to him thinking and here the most beautiful and artistic quotes emerge, "Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day." A man scared by almost everything is contrasted by his friend Withnail, a man of little commen sense and a coward.
"An expert on bulls you are not Withnail. A coward you are": ("I" being confronted by a bull in the countryside while Withnail casually gives instruction over the fence)
Withnail, a sickly looking alcoholic, has the most hilarious lines and does the most ridiculous things. For example while sitting in their freezing flat he decides to rub his body with deep heat and continues his search for booze. Upon finding the lighter fluid, he fights off "I's" advice downing the lot and demanding him to fetch the anti-freeze. The film is littered with such absurdities.
After a depressing time in the city the pair decides to go on holiday in the country. Borrowing the cottage off Withnail's outrageously gay Uncle Monty (Dudley's father in Harry Potter!), they head off to Penrith in Wales. The film explores their ineptitude to cope in such a primitive situation. When Uncle Monty comes to visit "I" is faced with the added problem of fighting of the lustful Uncle Monty, who is determined to have his way with him.
This film is Richard E Grant's first and best ever role. While this film may only seem amusing to a certain sense of humour it is worth a watch, as if it appeals to you, you will not forget it. The DVD is a must as you will watch it more than once, and it makes great viewing after a night out. The film can often give rise to drinking games also. One classic; every time they drink in the film, you drink. Good luck with that as you may need an ambulance on speed dial! With many other wonderful characters throughout the film it offers excellent viewing. A must see.
Summary: This film is clever, funny, you will qoute it, good to watch with friend. What more can I say!
