Advantages: Hilarious, Extremely Quotable
Disadvantages: You will watch again and again and again ...
I was introduced to this film by a friend when I asked why he kept shouting 'Scrubbers!' out my car window.
The film essentially is about friendship. Based in the late 1960's on the lives of two unemployed actors who, following an amphetamine binge, decide a trip to the countryside would be invigorating. What follows is a hilarious and distinctly different blend of British humor and wit than what I have ever seen, with the potential for quoting seemingly random dialogue by Richard E. Grant rivaled only by 'Borat' In his guide to America.
This film was made on a low budget, however this has by no means affected the quality of the film, it helps capture and retain the 'believeability' of the whole scenario. The film is a classic, I have watched it several times and still enjoy every minute of it, it is often the subject of conversation (Shouting scrubbers out of a car passenger window when you are drunk never seems to lose its amusement) the film appears to be achieving cult status locally as it is being passed around house to house.
I would heartily recommend this film to anyone! And for the price, its a snatch! Buy it, watch it, pass it on!
Random quote from film ...
Withnail: [having just drunk a bottle of lighter fluid] Got any more?
Peter Marwood: No. I have nothing.
Withnail: Liar. What's in your toolbox.
Peter Marwood: Nothing.
Withnail: Liar. You've got antifreeze.
Peter Marwood: You bloody fool. You should never mix your drinks.
Summary: Great British Film

- 06/11/07 I enjoyed it when I saw it a couple of years ago, but haven't felt like re-watching it since. Maybe if I was going to play a drinking game along to it... |

- 06/11/07 Well it certainly had a cult status at the time it came out but I too think it's a bit overrated or could be that I just find Richard E. Grant irritating :-) |
