Advantages: funniest film of its era
Disadvantages: Robinsons decision to stop films
With Bruce Robinson directing this masterpiece, at the helm is Richard E. Grant as Withnail, and the neurotic "I" played by Paul McGann, these two housemates think "signing on" is fashionable, the laughs in Withnail and I are continuous.
Both are skint, wannabe actors whose best parts to date have been in dodgy adverts, they find themselves stuck in a house overrun by stoned rats and with "matter" growing in the sink the only concern is booze, and a bountiful supply. To keep warm in this house, a dose of "Deep-Heat" rub is the answer, and plenty off that too boot.
As "I" tucks into a bowl of "something hot", Withnail looks at him in total disgust asking "you got soup?,why didn't I get any soup?", he quickly retorts "its not soup, its coffee". Hilarity
Ralph Brown, an actor I just love in a film, plays the part of dope fiend "Danny", whose wild inventions will one day, set him free from the grips of dealing drugs, I would love to have seen more of him in the film, though this may have diluted his character down somewhat.
Laugh? I nearly passed ma fags out....(well i would if i smoked), the scene where "shotgun fishing" is involved is like - - all else Ive seen before, but the thing is, it's totally believable, the things these people do, could and do pass in Britain as "normal".
It got some shoddy reviews when it was released, this continual shooting down of Robinson's films is the reason he no longer directs, a huge loss to not only the UK film industry, but the film industry as a whole.
He may be long off the scene, yet this gem will standout with the best of British comedy.

- 13/06/08 It's a great film, but I'm not sure a list of the funniest bits is really all that useful as a review. |

- 13/06/08 The film irritates me. Its too studenty. Although Rich E GRant is superb in everything he does. You can physically see his tongue-in-cvheek in every film he does on screen. |
