Advantages: Hilarious, great sound track and makes a brilliant drinking game.
Disadvantages: People will be quoting it at you forever...but its fun really!
This is by far the most quateable film on the planet! It was written and directed by Bruce Robinson and is a cult classic! I am sure I've watched this film more than 50 times.
The plot is simple. It's 1969, Withnail and Marwood (I) are out of work artsy types. Withnail is "a trained actor, reduced to the status of a bum" due to lack of work and a useless agent. Marwood is a writer, hence the "I" of the title. They are living in squalour in a flat in Camden town.
The film is almost split into 3 sections. The flat, the cottage, the flat.
The opening scene is perfect. A saxophone solo of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" brings us though the flat and into Marwood's room. He looks lonely, desparate and the film looks entirely serious and dark. The atmosphere is brilliantly set with this scene. Marwood proceeds to a greasy spoon cafe where we find out he is panicking, coming down from a high and drowning in his fears. He returns to the flat to deal with Withnail. When we finally see Withnail (Rihard E. Grant) he is staggering up the stairs with a glass of wine. He downs it and proclaims "We've just run out of wine, what are we going to do about it".
What follows is Withnail and I's attempts to improve their situation, which eventually results in a trip to Uncle Monty's cottage (via a hilarious car journey).
The entire film is full of misunderstanding which result in hilarity. It's a real laugh out loud kind of film, which, to my dissappointment, not everyone seems to get!
You'll be quoting it to your friends forever and the soundtrack is fantastic - Hendrix, Dylan, the Beatles, and that wonderful version of a Whiter Shade of Pale.
Summary: A really funny cult movie.
