Wizards of Waverly Place is one of the best shows the Disney Channel has made. I am still annoyed they haven't put from season 2 onwards on DVD but was glad I could at least get the movie.
The Russo family is made up of Alex, Justin and Max, along with there parents. The three children are wizards in training and one day the winner of the wizard competition will win their wizard powers for good whilst the other two loose everything. No one knows the secret of there powers other than Alex's best friend Harper.
In this movie the Russo's go on a family holiday. After many arguments over the itinerary the children accidently cast a spell meaning things go back to before there parents met. They are clueless about there family and if the spell isn't fixed quickly life will go back to then and as the children weren't born yet they could disappear forever.
Due to there not being a reverse spell, the only way to fix the problem is to find the 'stone of dreams.' This is a challenge when it is hidden in a secret location causing a big adventure but you can't trust everyone along the way.
My favourite part of this movie is when they set off on their adventure as it is nice to see Alex and Justin working together for once. The movie shows just how much the children care for there siblings even though they dont usually show it.
It is interesting to see how the children cope without an adult around as although they believe they are independent it is more difficult when there is no one to turn to.
It was a shame that there wasn't as much of Harper as usual as I have always liked the bond Alex and Harper share.
At the end of the movie I really like the song 'Magic' as it is a really catchy tune. It's a shame it isn't in the film itself.
Overall this is a fantastic film full of magic and adventure. If you enjoyed the tv show you'll enjoy this.
Wizards of Waverley Place The Movie is a movie based on the Disney Channel TV series of the same name. The movie was released in 2009 and follows the Russo family on their holiday to the Caribbean.
--Selena Gomez as Alex Russo - Trouble maker and funny. Love her an think she my favourite character.
--David Henrie as Justin Russo - Smart, nerdy and avoid trouble as much as he can.
--Jake T. Austin as Max Russo - Very silly and stupid but funny character. His stupidity does get annoying at times but I still think he is funny.
--Maria Canals-Barrera as Theresa Russo - Fun mother that likes to think she is cool.
--David DeLuise as Jerry Russo - Fun father that thinks he is cool too.
--Jennifer Stone as Harper Finkle - Crazy, wacky and makes all her clothes herself. Alex's best friend and might aswell be apart of the Russo family.
There was not much of Harper in the film which is a shame because all her crazy personality in the TV show would have been good to see in the movie.
The cast have very much maintain the characteristics that the have in the series that made me love it. The performances from there cast were good but there wasn't anything outstanding to really mention.
The movie follows the Russo family on their holiday to the Caribbean where they get into lots of mischief. The holiday gets of to a terrible start when Alex has a heated argument with her mother because she won't let her go and hang out with a boy at the pool and forbids her to use magic. Alex then wishes her parents had never met not knowing she still had her wand and it made her wish come true. After the wand grants the wish Alex, Max and Justin are devastated when they find out their parents don't remember them.
Jerry gave up his wizard powers to marry Theresa so since they never met his regains his powers and the kids have to find a way to reverse the spell. They realise after speaking to Jerry casually about the situation that if they don't do something quick there memories and existence will slowly disappear.
The stone of dreams is what they need to reverse the spell and they then set of on an adventure of finding it with a man that's not so upfront about his real intentions.
The plot I found to be very fun to get into because they go from one mess to another which is always entertaining when you have Alex who wants to have fun and is very flippant and Justin who is very serious and is stressing over the mess they are in which is Justin.
The plot sees Justin and Alex have a heart to heart and it brings them closer which is good because I don't think before that they even understood each other.
The TV series usually gives a New York atmosphere and it was nice to see the movie go somewhere else. Having a different environment that is refreshing with hotels, beaches and islands made the movie feel different but I liked it because it was nice to see them in a different place.
The spells they do in this movie are definitely not as mind blowing to watch as the ones from Harry Potter but they are good to watch. They have managed to put some really good special effects in the movie like at one point where they are hoping across moving rocks in the air was quite cool to watch. Also when Justin is getting sucked into quick sand/mud it looking very convincing that it was really happening.
I think the movie was really fun to watch and has lots of comedy throughout and is an all-round fun family movie. The only thing I would have added to the movie is more of Harper because she is funny to watch in the series so I think she would have brought more to the movie as she is quite a crazy character.
The DVD is available to buy on Amazon for New & Used from £0.90. I definitely recommend having a family evening watching this movie if you have kids that like this sort of thing.
Wizards of Waverly Place - The Movie
Please note: This review is on the film only - not the DVD!
When you leave your childhood behind, you are expected to grow up, perhaps watch serious documentaries and news channels - yeah right! With my own daughter as well as my younger brother and sister there is always some sort of childrens programme on the television and I have to admit that secretly I actually enjoy some of them, especially some of the films on the Disney Channel and Wizards of Waverly Place - the series - is one of the funniest so called childrens programmes around at the moment. I didn't actually get into the series until I saw the movie on the day it aired on the Disney Channel mainly as it had been advertised so many times and there was nothing else on so I thought why not?
Although this review is about the movie and not the series I want to give you a little background on the series which helps understand the movie itself, even though the movie can be watched as a one off. I actually watched the movie before seeing any of the series and loved it, though after watching the series after I found that I liked the movie even more as I knew the characters backgrounds etc.
Wizards of Waverly Place is a relatively new series that originally aired in 2007. was created by Todd J. Greenwald, and stars Selena Gomez, David Henrie and Jake T. Austin, as three siblings with magical abilities. As I write this review, it has just began showing its third series.
The series is about the Russo family, mainly the three sibling wizards; Alex, Justin and Max (Alex being the middle sister - not a boy!). They live with their mother, who is mortal, and father who is a former wizard who lost his powers when he fell in love with a mortal. Their parents are very strict on what the siblings can and can not use their magical abilities for though this certainly does not stop them and often gets them into some hilarious trouble. They also have wizard classes with their father to work towards a magic competition between the siblings which will lead to only one of them keeping their abilities - something Justin works really hard to do. The show itself has won many awards which include Primetime Emmys 2009 - Outstanding Children's Program (Winner) and many nominations for character performances.
The movie of Wizards of Waverly Place is more of a special feature length episode and has the same cast. It premiered not long ago this year on the Disney Channel and follows the family as they go on their family holiday.
The movie starts with the family preparing for their holiday except for Alex who is going to be staying with her friend Harper though through a series of events which includes Alex turning part of the Sub-Station (The family restaurant) into a train and riding through the underground in it to a party she was banned from, Alex finds herself forced to go with the rest of the family on their holiday - something she is not happy about.
Not long after they get to their holiday destination they meet a former wizard Archie and his 'girlfriend' Giselle who is actually a parrot (once a human). He tries to enlist the siblings to help him find the Stone of Dreams which can grant any wish or reverse any spell as he wants to change his girlfriend back into a human though many wizards have gone in search of the stone and never returned so Jerry (their dad) forbids them.
And here begins the start of the tale!
Alex, being her usual self, gets into trouble when trying to use a spell on her mother and wishes that her parents had never met and as she is holding the full wizard wand and spell book, her wish is granted...
Now the parents do not know one another, do not know their children and if they never meet the children will never be born and soon fade out of existence. With no option left, Alex and Justin go to find the Stone of Dreams though soon, Max (the youngest) begins to loose his memories and manages to persuade Jerry to go help him find his siblings in which his mum tags along.
I don't want to spoil the whole film for you so I wont tell you how it all ends but this is a Disney film so everyone already knows how they end! Lets just say that there is a lot more magic, mayhem and fun as the siblings try to restore the world as it was.
The plot is a simple one though it works really well and is great for all the family - I personally really enjoyed it and I'm 27! It is a well thought out plot and runs very smoothly and every moment is enjoyable. I don't think there was any moment within the film that I found boring. There is also plenty of child friendly action involved and a lot of very funny moments within the storyline.
As already mentioned, the cast is the same as in the series though only the main family with a brief appearance by Harper at the beginning. The family is also supported by a couple of other good actors though as a whole, this film does not have a huge cast and whilst this wouldn't be good in other films - it works really well in this movie.
The main cast includes;
Selena Gomez as Alex Russo
Selena is perhaps one of the best cast members in the whole film though in saying that I certainly do not mean that the others are weaker - in fact, the whole cast is a very strong one. Selena's natural acting is not only true to life but her reactions make everything all the more funny to watch. She is very much a strong lead character and works well with every single member of the cast.
David Henrie as Justin Russo
David plays the more serious sibling very well, though not without its equally funny moments which are played extremely well. As a second main actor in the movie, David and Selena work brilliantly together and really bring this film along well.
Jake T. Austin as Max Russo
A real star in the making! Jake plays the mischievous youngest sibling brilliantly and his facial expressions are simply the best!
Maria Canals Barrera as Theresa Russo
Maria, as the others, is really great in this movie though perhaps not the strongest of the cast, yet this is not a bad thing as too many strong actors would perhaps be too much. In saying that, she is certainly not a bad actor and has some really great moments. Her comedy is not as full as the other characters though she helps balance out the cast well.
David DeLuise as Jerry Russo
David is brilliant as Jerry, supporting the rest of the cast well and adapting to his personas really well. His many different sides of character in this movie sees David able to adapt really well and brings another side to the 'family' in this movie.
Steve Valentine as Archie
Archie is the only real main character in the film who is not any part of the series. Although I did not really take to him at first, his drab characterisation is fitting and it ends up working well with the rest of the characters though he does not really stand out as much as perhaps he should.
Jennifer Stone as Harper Finkle
Although only in the first part of the movie, I feel that Jennifer needed a mention as one of the main characters as she is a main character in the series itself. As Harper, she actually really annoys me though the actor plays her part well.
The cast really make this movie fun and exciting to watch and as the story line progresses, the cast go from strength to strength. Perhaps it helps that the majority of the cast have worked together on two and a bit seasons before making the film - you can really see their great friendships and working relationships within their characters and acting.
Although it is not a big screen movie, it does have a few great special effects. No, not huge explosions, car crashes and other effects you might know from more adult films, but effects involving magic and green screening. All the effects are child friendly and all look great. There is only one effect which is memorable as not actually being as great and that is an animal/human transformation. Although it is not brilliant, it actually is quite funny to watch so really nothing is lost there.
Although there is not many songs within the movie itself, I wanted to mention the songs that do appear within series and partly in the movie. There is also a CD out of these songs though to be honest, apart from the main theme tune, I dont think it is worth buying as they are songs that most people would probably have already.
The main theme tune is sung by Selena herself and is actually really catchy with a great beat. Selena has a really great voice and it is a tune that even if you havent seen the movie or series, would probably find yourself singing along to easily. Selena also sings a number of other tracks in the movie and series;
1. Selena Gomez - Disappear
2. Selena Gomez - Magical
3. Selena Gomez - Magic
4. Steve Rushton - Strange Magic
5. Honor Society - Magic
6. Mitchel Musso - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
7. KSM - Magic Carpet Ride
8. Meaghan Martin - Magic
9. Drew Seeley - You Can Do Magic
10. Raven-Symoné - Some Call It Magic
11. Aly & AJ - Do You Believe In Magic
12. Selena Gomez - Everything Is Not As It Seems
Although a lower budget film, it perhaps would have been nice to have a few bigger effects though saying that, it is a great overall movie and the lower budget really doesn't show. It is appealing to both children and adults (and Im not the only one who enjoyed it!) and is very funny throughout. The comedy is not as quick paced as in the series but please don't let that put you off. The story line is safe yet works really well and overall, this is a family movie well worth watching.
Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie is a Disney Channel Original Movie that first aired on the Disney Channel on August 28th 2009 in the USA and October 23rd 2009 in the UK and Ireland as part of Wiz-Tober. The movie is a film adaptation of popular teen show Wizards of Waverly Place which is also shown on the Disney Channel. It was filmed on location in Puerto Rico.
The Russo family are off on holiday to the Caribbean but Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) wants to stay at home with best friend Harper (Jennifer Stone). After using the forbidden book and wand, that Justin (David Henrie) was taking on holiday, to transport the Sub Station to the party Alex was forbidden to go to, Alex is then forced to join the family holiday. Not only that but the kids - Alex, Justin and Max (Jake T. Austin) are forbidden from using any magic whilst on holiday.
Theresa and Jerry insist that the holiday in the Caribbean is to be a family holiday and that they're to spend all of their time together. However, Alex wants to go to a party on the resort and Theresa says no. Knowing that Justin has betrayed their parents and has brought the full-wizard wand, Alex blackmails him into letting her use it to charm Theresa. Just as Alex is getting the spell ready, Theresa walks in and forbids Alex to use magic for the rest of the holiday as well as grounding her for two months when they get home. In anger, Alex screams, "I hate you. I wish you and dad had never even met." As Alex is still holding the wand, the spell comes true and suddenly Theresa and Jerry don't know each other and don't know the kids.
The only way for Alex to reverse the spell is to find the Stone of Dreams. If they don't reverse the spell, though, Alex, Justin and Max will disappear within 48 hours. With the help of a magician, Archie (Steve Valentine) who used to be a wizard, Alex and Justin set off to find the Stone of Dreams leaving Max behind to keep Theresa and Jerry out of trouble. Can Alex and Justin find the Stone of Dreams and reverse the spell or are they destined to forget about each other and disappear?
I'm a huge fan of Wizards of Waverly Place as a regular series and looked forward to seeing the movie. Unlike the Hannah Montana movie, which was great but didn't really tie in with the series, I thought Wizards The Movie did that perfectly. Rather than being a separate entity a la Hannah Montana The Movie, Wizards The Movie was more like an extended episode except it was set in the Caribbean (but filmed in Puerto Rico) and seemed to have a much bigger budget.
The acting, as always, was superb. If you didn't see my review of Wizards the TV show, look for a quick re-cap of the characters at the end of my review. The movie really was fantastic. Seeing Jerry and Theresa as free, single people when they forget about the kids, and each other, was quite fun to see. Jerry seemed like a totally different man, so much freer, the change was immense. The movie also forced Alex to see how selfish she could be as well as showing just how irresponsible magic can be. The acting, as I mentioned above, was great as always. The cast get on so well and I would find it easy to believe they were an actual family.
The movie uses a lot of CGI/special effects to show the use of the magic and I thought it was done very well. It was incredibly impressive and didn't seem at all fake, which can often happen with a show like this. The scenery was also fantastic. I loved that the film was filmed in Puerto Rico and they showed a lot of beautiful scenery.
Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie is a fantastic watch if you're a fan of the show and can probably be watched as a stand-alone to welcome new fans into the world of these wizards. The fact that it tied in with the series as a stand-alone episode was fantastic. It didn't alter anything within the series itself which means there's no continuity problems when I go back to continue watching the series.
Alex Russo played by Selena Gomez: Alex is the middle child and constantly teases Justin, who is the bookworm of the family. Alex cares about a lot of things but seems very laidback with Wizardry and everything it entails. She's always scheming and uses magic whenever needed which often gets her into trouble. In the film, she's no different. Gomez plays her fantastically and Alex is one of my favourite TV characters.
Justin Russo played by David Henrie: As I mentioned above, Justin is the bookworm of the family and is incredibly smart. He's usually the one who gets Alex out of trouble on many occasions. Alex always teases him which is usually always hilarious. If I had to bet money on who would become the family wizard, it would have to be Justin.
Max Russo played by Jake T. Austin: Max is so laid back it's unreal. He's the baby of the family and comes across as incredibly stupid. He also seems to find the simplest things incredibly fascinating. I think Jake T. Austin plays him really well and I love Max, he's the little brother most people would want.
Theresa Russo played by Marian Canals-Barrera: Theresa is a fantastic character. She puts up with the kids' magic incredibly well even though she seems to despise it. She's never surprised when one of the kids use magic.
Jerry Russo played by David DeLuise: Jerry is a former wizard, he won his families wizard duel but had to give it up to marry Theresa. Jerry is very overprotective of Alex but always comes to her first when he realises there's a scheme going on. DeLuise's comic timing is fantastic and he always makes me laugh.
Harper Finkle played by Jennifer Stone: Harper is Alex's best friend who dresses rather outrageously (she loves to dress as fruit) and plans to be a fashion designer. She also loves Justin which Justin doesn't reciprocate. She's always full of enthusiasm and she always makes me smile although she's probably not my favourite character.
