Advantages: Good when it gets going
Disadvantages: It draaaaaaaaaags on for forever
"Three friends on a road trip in the remote Australian Outback are plunged into danger when they accept help from a seemingly friendly local...
Greg McLean's truly terrifying thriller is based, in part, on real events from the infamous 'Backpacker Murders' which plagued Australia's Hume Highway between 1989 and 1992."
This isnt actually that bad a film, its just that the "build up" and character development before the action commences seems to take forever and a day - I can appreciate that the character development is necessary in order to get the audience to gain sympathy for the characters for later on when the stuff hits the fan, but quite why so much of it was necessary is beyond me.
I dont think that this film knows, ultimately what it wants to be - does it want to be a horror? or a straight forward drama? It seems to me that the film-makers were sure either and so decided to make a drama and tack a bit of horror on at the end for good measure - see, to me, if you are watching a horror movie, you arent watching it, generally speaking, to admire the quality of the script - you want to be scared witless!!!
Anyway, once it gets going, its good - not scary, but it is pretty tense, although I have to say I dont think this lives up to the hype with regards to the violence at all (unless I have just seen so many horror movies that Im desensitised to it all now!) and it certainly doesnt compare to the likes of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The loopy killer guy was a pretty decent character though - he's a normal lookin guy, but you can tell that there's something not quite right about him!
I wont go into detail about what happens to who and why because I dont want to spoil it for anyone who hasnt seen it.
Its not the worst film Ive seen recently, but its certainly not the best.
Horror-wise, its a bit slow, but its nearly worth it in the end. Nearly.
Summary: Doesnt quite live up to the hype
