Advantages: some chilling moments

Disadvantages: none

The army is testing a new Geiger counter on a beach in Scotland, and this test reveals a previously unknown source of radiation, creating a series of explosions and a large fracture in the earth.

Dr. Adam Royston, who works for the Atomic Energy Establishment at Lockmouth and is played by Dean Jagger, is called in to investigate, but unfortunately by the time he arrives the source of the radiation has vanished. However, Dr. Royston works out that an old dormant creature at the centre of the Earth has been reawakened, and this creature starts rampaging, only to be destroyed by a machine created by the good doctor.

The film is quite similar in theme and tone to THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT, which Hammer Studios had released the previous year to great success. Dr. Royston is a character akin to Quatermass, and here he is played by Dean Jagger. Frazer Hines, who would later be a huge star in DOCTOR WHO and EMMERDALE FARM here appears in a bit part. The film as a whole has some chilling moments, and the make-up is excellent.
